- DAN: @mharps $SFL OK. It is being sold. High volume. The channel is broken. So my suggestion would be to put at stop below $13.10. IF it falls to a new low, I suspect that you shouldn't be holding it.

Suspect $STNG-Scorpio Tankers(10.1% dividend) is in the same boat as $FRO-Frontline(10.7% dividend); $NAT-Nordic American Tankers(9.8% dividend); $SFL-Ship Finance(11.8% dividend) All seem to struggle under the current sluggish global economy and apparent oil glut. None have the Earnings to keep paying the dividends listed. Shipping, like farming is a capital intensive proposition. Dividend disappears when expenses surge. These dividends have the Potemkin Village look. By the way, STNG is STNG=Star Trek, the Next Generation.

- smitherese: $SFL - @jan2138 - Newbie and still trying to learn from the best. Since you are in the Hall of Fame would appreciate your thoughts on this stock as a LTH. I know yield not high enough to qualify as a "yieldhog" since it is below 10% but I am already in other reits, etc and trying to diversify where dividends come from. Got in back in July and added yesterday before today's ex-date so thankfully even with the drop today still in the green - barely. Thanks for any input you can give me.
- jan2138: @smitherese $SFL; thanks for asking about it. The div. history has been excellent since 2009, i.e. steady to increasing payouts. Prior to 2009, they paid out more but not a concern now. I am not familiar with the fundamentals but after a cursory exam ...
- smitherese: Hello. New member here. More of an investor than a trader and prefer stocks with dividends. Would appreciate thoughts on $SFL. Considering starting a new position in this stock. Does anyone see any pitfalls with this? Above 20, 50 and 200 day sma and dividends have been pretty steady for last 3 years. Dividend over 8%. Not sure if I am missing something here but it looks pretty good at the middle of the Bollinger Band. Thanks in advance for any input.
- DragonFly: @smitherese $SFL - Welcome ! I don't hold SFL but do hold several high yielding reits. We call them Yieldhogs! Looks like a good entry but I don't know any thing about the co. 8% isn't high enough for me. LOL

- Hank1: $SFL@smitherese...i took a look at the chart and imho it looks like there's resistance at 19 and support at 18 (right above the 50-day moving average). I would wait for a pullback to the 50-day or at the least buy a small position if it makes a new high (with a plan to add on pullbacks). In any case, it doesn't look like it's going to blast off soon. I think you have time. It's also tough to buy anything right now when the market is up so much today. Good luck.

- mharps: NAT: I still am holding but $SFL has been much better
- Hunter: $SFL - Ship Finance International - I think this is one worth a look. $SFL is in Phase 2 of a breakout and forming a bull flag pattern. The 50 day M.A. is moving up and will soon cross the 200 day M.A. Low risk entry with a stop just under $14.00. Looks like the stock could pop to the $18.00 range with phase 3 of the breakout. Just for kickers, the stock has close to a 8% #dividend. I am going to start an entry position on Monday.

But, my plan has worked this week and have taken profits and had good entries, and only have small positions to carry over. RAMS Aries M ... - evanesce: Shippers: The Nazz site shows short interest as of December 31 (just 8 days ago). Short selling is starting to pick up, but for perspective it's nothing like #financials or home builders. Of the ones I track, short ratio over 5 (5 days or more to cover at normal volume) include: $EGLE, 6 days, I think it's rolling over $FRO, 8 days, rough chart $GLF, 14 days, could be trouble it it fails a retest at $41 $HOS, 14 days, near the top of recent prices (possible short #squeeze upwards?) $SFL, 11 days, middle of trading range (no opinion) $TDW, 6 days, may be starting to roll over TRMA, 12 days, for 6 months has printed higher lows, now mid range I don't know the fundamentals of any of these names, this is just a quick technical take.

On shippers, the optionable ones that passed my @charting criteria of about a month ago were: $DRYS DSX $EGLE EXM $FRO GMRK $GNK HOS HRZ OSG $SFL SSW $TDW TNP TRMA I think that the ones that climbed in hockey-stick style might be avoided, but there are some decent entry points developing in $FRO HOS $SSW TDW TNP.
