  • DavidK: $VRTX- Woodman - can’t recall if I reported back on the Journavx Pain Drug recently approved for Acute Pain only ( I received a 2 week supply ) . My back issues required something . This drug worked well for 7 days . I played in golf tournament and on a Sunday we had a 12 tee time . I took 1 pill around 11 and then another around 3 thinking this would help the swing along with many drinks . Anyway , I woke up that Monday all broken out in a rash which is a side effect . I stopped the drug . Today I had an epidural on spine and Dr told me I probably took those too close together along with the sun and booze . He claims his patients are raving about it . Issue it’s not approved for chronic pain yet
  • woodman: @DavidK $VRTX - Wow. Back pain sucks. I've been there at times with debilitating back pain. Knock on wood, not in some time have I been put on the floor for days. How has the epidural gone for you? Will you ever try Jornavx again? Do you know if VRTX sought chronic pain relievf approval, or if it didn't why it didn't? I seem to recall that they may seek approval for chronic in the future, but I'm fuzzy on this.
  • DavidK: @woodman $VRTX Dr didn’t know what their plans were for Acute Long term . I would love to take it when needed but my primary care doctor said be careful because if you have another allergic reaction it will be worse second time around . Epidural was my first . Dr said give it 2-3 days for it to kick in. My brother has back issues and all kind of procedures done and he said epidural should work for 3-4 months or longer . Then back to square 1 . I have 3 golf tournaments in June so I had to get it done . I am probably in better shape than 95% of 68 yr old men but whne that spine acts up it will bring you to your knees . Came out of no where about 3 months ago . Spinal stenosis with arthritis.
  • woodman: @DavidK $VRTX - Good to hear that you should make it through your golf tournaments. I have multiple bulging discs that, at times, would really flare up. Not so much in recent years, but in my 20s and 30s, it was pretty bad at times. I was playing a lot of sports back then, which certainly didn't help. I had to give some of them up because of it. My back is often achy (which is tolerable), but no major blow outs in some time. Like you said, it puts you to your knees (and then on your back for several days).

  • DavidK: $VRTX- went to chiropractor this morning fighting a bad back. Spinal stenosis and arthritis. Just came up out of nowhere a few months ago. Hard to play golf and had to back out of one tournament and have another coming next weekend. Bottom line I tol ...
  • billyzeke: @DavidK $VRTX $SPY Yes keep us in the loop. I'd like to know how it works for you as I have been battling chronic back pain for years.
  • Setshot: @DavidK $VRTX $SPY - Be careful with your back my friend. I started with back problems about 10 years ago. I suggest you see a neuro surgeon and get an MRI (Hope you are on Medicare so cost will be almost nothing). I played golf after my first surgery but that ended after two more lower back surgeries. Then I had neck surgery that has me on a walker and not sure I'll get off it (now almost 90). I do get back shots every 4 months and they help. I suggest you skip chiropracters and pain doctors and get at the real problem. Good luck.
  • woodman: @DavidK $VRTX $SPY - Yeah, $VRTX's Journavx is their new non-opioid pain reliever for moderate or severe pain. like you said, acute, not chronic. I've been wondering how well it works. Non-opioid is a great thing. Please let us know how it works for you. Best of luck.
  • Setshot: @DavidK $VRTX $SPY - I'm no doctor David but with all my other troubles, I sometimes get sudden pain in my back and hip area and other times it travels down my leg. I found the best solution was to visit a local clinic and get multi-day prednisone pills and they work like a charm in a few days.
  • DavidK: @Setshot $VRTX $SPY yes I had a MRI done about a year ago and all my primary care doctor ( nurse who called me ) said was you’re getting old and spine shrinking . I said no shit . I had really no pain that wasn’t bearable. Anyway 4-5 wee ...
  • Awesomeo: $VRTX could be a break out from a downward sloping trend line from the high in Dec and bounce off the 8dma

  • woodman: $VRTX up nearly 30% off the bottom, continuing to do well a week after approval for its non-opioid pain killer.
  • lance1161: @woodman $VRTX If this is truly what they say it is, after watching a family member who is so dependent and suffering from doctor prescribed benzo's, medicines like this should be a no brain(er) to avoid dependency at all costs. To the moon if this true once people grasp this... Even if they charge $15 a pill or so.....
  • woodman: @lance1161 $VRTX - sorry to hear about your brother. I too hope this drug is all they say it is, and not some crazy Purdue/Sackler-type fraud.
  • lance1161: @woodman $VRTX - Hmm. Never mentioned it was my brother. It is not, my concern is for those people now addicted and don't understand their plight to becoming normal functioning human beings. That stock should become a gold mine soon...
  • woodman: @lance1161 $VRTX - sorry, I don't know where the heck I came up with your brother.
  • woodman: $VRTX @lance1161 - looks like a lot of rivaling canidates in this TA, though a little behind. VRTX is the first approved. There are many Phase 1 and Phase 2 trials, and at least one Phase 3 trial, though VKTX's branding for "accute" pain may or may not separate it. I'm still investigating exactly what that may mean vs Chronic or OA or other types of pain focus.. https://x.com/Biomaven/status/1876296751042142716
  • woodman: $VRTX - VRTX has an even bigger block-buster with its cystic fribrosis drug (Vanza triple aka Alyftrek), which is expected to be doing $8.3 billion in sales by 2030. The pain killer (Suztrigine) is expected to be doing a little less than $3 billion in sales by 2030.
  • woodman: $VRTX - approval of its non-opioid pain killer. No risk of addiction. That seems like a big deal. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/01/30/fda-approves-vertex-non-opioid-painkiller-drug.html It also received approval of reimbursement for gene-edited therapy of sickle-cell disease from NHS of England.
  • joelsg1: @woodman $VRTX Hurt my back tripping over packed go-bags in the zero-dark hours Tuesday and Advil/Tylenol not doing it for me so, yes a big deal if it works better without addictive properties.
  • woodman: @joelsg1 $VRTX - Sorry to hear that. Get the 800 mg ibuprofen. I've thrown my back out a number of times. It's immobilizing. New non-opioid pain-killer treatment will be very welcome for chaps like us.
  • joelsg1: @woodman $VRTX Thank you. I remain concerned about Advil because of the lawsuit by Seattle Seahawk cornerbacks years ago who suffered kidney damage when their trainers piled on the Advil for pain, though way above indicated dose. I tripped and fell face and teacup-first into a padded stairway, suffering some type of lower back compression issue, so far a slow recovery but I will step up dosage. Read that alternating Tylenol and Advil works since each drug works differently, so trying that as well.
  • woodman: @joelsg1 $VRTX - Yes, there is some kindey risk. Talk to your doctor. I have to be easy on ibuprofen ever since removal of one of my kindeys (renal cancer). But the one I have remaining has done very well even though it's smaller and slightly less effective at its job than the one they removed. (They did cool scans to ensure my remaining kidney would be okay to do the job of two, before they removed the one that needed to go. I literally watched how they worked on a screen as they did their tests.) Before that, I used to use high dose ibuprofen for a short time when I threw my back out. Tylenol is inefective as pain relief for me. It does work differently, however. It metabolizes through the liver rather than the kidneys. So, don't drink on Tylenol!
  • Henry: $VRTX live by the study die by the study
  • dgrobo: Dan could you cover $JD and $VRTX in training
  • DAN: @dgrobo $JD $VRTX JD pullback is pretty steep. This would need a lot more time to consolidate before it would be something to consider. VRTX -- I think I covered this today. If not, it's breaking out today on good volume. Seems a bit extended to be bought right here, but it's certainly one to be grabbing on a pullback. Hope this helps.

  • Margi1983: @woodman $CLRB Thanks for the update. Long with modest position. You really know your biotech stuff. These others are not really biotech but I am also long $VRTX, $LLY, $NVO, and $PFE in the pharma space
  • woodman: @Margi1983 $CLRB $VRTX $LLY $NVO $PFE - I won't hold all my shares through, but I still need to decide how much I will hold through. It's risky for sure. I can't imagine the company would be promoting this data so much into the presentation(s), but crazy stuff happens in BioLand. It could be a disappointment even if "good" or just simply an immediate sell the news. One never knows.
  • Margi1983: @Margi1983 $VRTX . Dang.. Up 8% today on news of a collaboration with Editas Medicine for gene editing tech. Missed the entry. Will wait for a pullback.
  • Margi1983: $VRTX.Nice base since mid -November is now becoming a squeeze. Trying to break above the 50 ma. My guess is that @scottrades is watching this one
  • bill52: $CRSP $VRTX Just my opinion but I think this is truly ground breaking and fascinating stuff for how diseases will be dealt with in the future. CRSP and VRTX partnered for the first ever approval of two therapies in the UK and expect approvals in the US in December. I'm not a doctor but sounds like you treat the problem at the DNA source and not just the symptoms. Here's one of the articles in IBD. https://finance.yahoo.com/m/4ce79342-7898-39b9-9cba-3697eeac8c6e/crispr-surges-after-winning.html
  • DAN: @bill52 $CRSP $VRTX I agree with you, bill. CRISPR gene editing is really cutting edge and important stuff. It can do a lot of good.

  • woodman: @sgiseller $CRSP - Thanks for the info. I can't believe I let $VRTX get away. I held it for a good while.
  • woodman: $VRTX - I actually did well with it, selling and buying back at the right times, but with my last sale I failed to buy it back. Perfect W formation on the weekly. Now its going to the moon.
  • joelsg1: @woodman $VRTX I had 1 right time, 1 wrong time, but lost track as well.
  • woodman: $VRTX continues to move higher. Has been very strong.
  • steve71: $MCRB Not for the fainthearted. I will be out before the close on Weds. Money good so far. $VRTX Biotechs go up and down. Vertex goes up. (There, I've jinxed it.) $XERS Their drug delivery platform is working. Now they just onboard more and more drugs.
  • woodman: @steve71 $MCRB $VRTX $XERS - Nice work with $MCRB.I never got on board though looked at it a lot. $$ tied up elsewhere so I never really got in gear with it. I think your idea to sell before PDUFA is a good one. Seems that approval is very likely, but the stock still isn't moving as hard as one would hope/expect. I get a $CDTX vibe with it (though MCRB does have much greater institutional support than CDTX did/does). I also think there are some questions about rollout post-approval.
  • steve71: @steve71 $MCRB $VRTX $XERS Guess I can only reply to myself, As an only child that's not a problem. I have also seen the JPM concern about slow early sales. That doesn't make sense to me. 20,000 C. diff deaths in U.S. yearly. C. diff is hard to treat initially. Recurrent C. diff is even more difficult, maybe because of drug resistance from the first round. So if recurrence can be 90% prevented why wouldn't the ICU doc treat every single initial case with SER-109? My bet is that every single primary case gets treatment - a run rate of 150,000 to 200,000 yearly in the U.S. alone. So I am hoping for post approval weakness for another bite of the apple.
  • woodman: @steve71 $MCRB $VRTX $XERS - Makes sense. Often the post-approval dips turn out to be great opportunities. CDTX is still suffering from its post-approval migraine. (No position in CDTX currently.)

Not all of these necessarily apply to each and every one, but some of these elements apply to each. Not an exhaustive list, but what instantly came to mind. Fwiw, I provided a small bit of color on most of these in a prior recent post here that you can search for. The chart is a factor, but to a more limited extent - less so than my ordinary trading MO.
