  • camaro69: $HE having one of it's better days since the fire in Lahaina
  • Auto: $HE added a little today long spec position
  • sgiseller: $HE. Have been trading in and out since the tragic fire, and the serious beat down to the stock. Squeezed out a 26% gain in about a month, holding 1-5 days at most, trading around a core pos. Sold all today, and sold weekly puts to get back. Tempted to buy back in RHRN as it has pulled back 3.5% from this morning's high. Todays run up was no doubt sparked by some fire chief saying they took a lunch break fighting the fire.

  • DAN: @Aragorn $ALK $AAL $UAL -- I covered those last night and they looked like they were ready to break out of those flag patterns.Tough to buy a stock that's trading above the upper Bollinger Band ("BBand") when those bands are pretty wide. But this strength today confirms that big traders still want to own them. They are under accumulation...not distribution. $HE -- very nice pop this morning. But it is so high that I couldn't buy it here. And it's still fairly strong this morning, trading right at the VWAP (Volume Weighted Average Price) based on 8 periods of data on a 5 minute chart. If I had to choose, I'd short it on further weakness. But happily, I don't have to choose. I can just watch and wait for a better trade setup.

  • scorpino: Utilities...too soon to call a bottom? $D ED $HE DUK $NI NU etc $XLU ... thoughts?
  • scorpino: XEL- any advice for a newb on this one? utilities sector down lately but many look to be at long term support(?) $ED D $HE XEL etc (most on or near 200dma)
  • scorpino: $D ED $HE - Rotation out of utilities? - Anyone follow this sector? My mom has had long term divy holdings in these $D ED $HE for long time. Looks like the charts are topping/rolling over, or maybe not? maybe just a buying op, but the 50d has been support and now appears it may possibly get tested as resistance? All 3 have bounced off 200d and heading to the descending 50d, maybe shot across the bow? maybe long term awesome buying op... I'm wondering, if they hit the 50d and pull back confirming resistance and a new downtrend, would long term folks here just hang on and ride it down, or liquidate and look for the rising sectors to rotate into? (materials? metals? oil?)
  • hondorpcv: @scorpino Regarding $D ED and $HE, if these really are long term holding for your mom, quit looking at the daily chart and focus on the weekly or even monthly. Unless your mom needs the money for upcoming expenses, these stocks are still in uptrends ...
  • scorpino: @hondorpcv, thanks for your response. I do also look at the weekly, and thanks for the reminder. $HE for example looks like it's hit it's long term resistance, on a weekly chart starting in 03. It hit and pulling back, yes at the moment may be getting support at the uptrending s line? I hope so! But what I'm hoping to avoid is a repeat of 9/08-2/09 period...don't know how far to let it fall before deciding it's time to cut the losses. On the plus side the big selloffs, except for 8/2011 have been on moderate volume, so guess the big inst selling hasn't come in yet?
  • hondorpcv: @scorpino Regarding $HE, on the weekly chart, last week was an accumulation week and bounce off the 40wk moving avg. If this does break down below the uptrending 40wk line, it will hover around that area and give you clues as to whether it is being accumulated or sold into on each attempt to move back over the line. If you are holding the stock for the #dividend, collect the #dividend and see how it behaves around the 40wk line. If you see signs of support, add a little if you want to keep this stock. In this low interest rate environment, the 4.5% yield of a utility is attractive to many people. Remember, the low for the year is around 24.50 and the high is around 29, not exactly your big mover here.
  • scorpino: Utilities, anyone know of macro or seasonal reasons for the big pullbacks on names like $ED D $HE DUK $NU NI etc. They all look like great buy points to me but also look like broken stocks...comments?
  • scorpino: $D @bethany, my folks have been in this for years. Has done well for them. Utilities have done well all year despite @Dan almost never mentioning that sector. The current charts in $D, $ED, $HE, etc have me concerned about why and how significant the rotation out of this sector will be going forward. Their first pos was in 2004, I added for her in 11/11, and again 8/2/12 (oops) ... hope I didn't screw the pooch on that one. at the time it looked like a strong support reversal on the 50dma, then things changed so future will tell.

  • scorpino: @ccrown4, i know the feeling, been waiting for a pb on $ED and $HE since I stopped out months ago when it looked like they were tanking, then I was too slow to get back in and missed the bottom. now they never let me back in (mom's acct that is) seems to me utilities have been working for a long time, surprised they don't get much airtime here
  • gold2stocks: SSM Cliff Notes - Thanks for all the nice notes. I mentioned early on I could not reply to everyone as I did not want to clutter up the board. I see OBV for $DYN exploding upwards (although its made a big move in the past two months), $SO right at #200ema which looks like its providing good support now, our old friend $HE moving out of a vol sq and now above #200ema.....any ideas in this sector ? thxs.
  • franknzupan: Ticker: $HE One @Dan mentioned and one we have been following. It has recovered after a downgrade and is sitting on the 50-day EMA. BB have the shape of a pincher. • db: $HE What to think?
  • David: $HE, I fired HE. I hired another company. Utilities may come back when this market slumps, but to many other places to make money. Good luck
  • CallaLilly: $HE - Downgraded July 10 ... 09:32 EDT $HE Hawaiian Electric downgraded to Underperform from Neutral at DA Davidson
  • rippashred: $HE - db, as a Hawaiian transplant on the "mainland" I can tell you that Hawaiian Electric has a subsidiary (American Savings Bank) that is likely the reason of their underperformance compared to other utilities. Tread lightly with this one...I fired them as well, stopped out at 17.50. Maybe we will have a better re-entry point, but I think there are utilities with better charts out there.
  • db: $HE rippashled Thanks for the info, just saw your post. I was stopped out early I will look else where.
  • rippashred: $HE - db, no problem. I am no expert on the state of American Savings Bank, but I do know that the bank is a large source of the cashflow that funds the #dividend for HE. $SO or PGN may be better utes for us to consider...
  • db: rippashred $HE I didn't have any idea a bank was so involved. I don't like that. Still looking for other utes in this market. My thinking is with a sell off money will go to utilities. Thanks again
  • db: To All I well know how new I am to this, but as I watch the train disappear into the distance I can't help but think what a fix we are really in. Think about Ca, what about all the jobs gone, that train might soon be back in the station. What about $HE
  • Cluggy: Utility Stocks - Anyone looking play it a little safe with possible long term potential? I thought $HE would be a good one but forgot to do my homework, did not buy right and got kicked hard. However somethink like $UIL looks good to me with good divident and Buy recommendations. Money web site gives it a 9 on StockScouter (anyone ever use that for confirmaton).
  • CallaLilly: $HE - just saying ... @thewall.com: Hawaiian Electric downgraded to Underperform from Neutral at DA Davidson. Oh, and @DAN (yes, this is a stock's call letters) upgraded to overweight. Early morning and I thought it was funny.
  • DAN: Cal -- @thewall.com is way, way late in upgrading me ("@DAN") to overweight. That call should have been made about 1 year and 25 pounds ago. $HE -- well, I guess we know that this trade is not working today. But to those who haven't ever thought to consider yield versus price action, consider that $HE has a +6% yield. Today, the stock is down nearly 3%. So in just one day, the stock has taken away half of the yield that it would take a year to realize. The takeaway (and one that jan probably lives by) is that you want to find the very high yielders, and then make sure that they are trending favorably.
  • trdollar: $HE Short? BB's opening to the downside, hard. Look back a few months and find another precipitous drop. Anyone going short on this? It did bounce off the 50SMA.
  • Cluggy: $HE - Bad investment - Lesson Learned - Bought this based on @Dan's video a few days ago but did not set a stop. Its a Utility right and I wanted it for the long term. Utilities pay good dividens and are not supposed to move much. @Dan always says to investigate a stock and not just take his chart opinion. Had I done that I would have found it is a definte sell recommendation and has some real issues for this year. I am down 8% now and guess I must bite the bullent and take the big loss.
  • justdoit: $HE I have it also down alittle. set a stop today on it just below my S3 support at 17.53 with 17.50 GTC stop.
  • jas609: @Dan & Team is $HE still worth a shot at 18.15 area, Utilities have been so weak? Thanks
  • ogas: $HE - Hawaiian Electric Hey @Dan or anyone with an opinion, After your recap on Monday,I set a price alert for $HE at 18.20. Yesterday, I received the alert and thought I would watch it for a while. Currently it is at 18.14. A week or two ago, a member of the team wrote that they watch the 8 and 12 day moving averages and waits to buy only when the 8 day turns positive as a matter of discipline. Right now, the 8 day looks negative to me. Do you think it is a good strategy to wait until the 8 day turns positive? I know other members use 7/10 (was that you @Bob?). I'm just trying to make entries with as much information as possible. Thanks to all... Connie
  • dmooney9: Cash advice was good @Dan. I'm there now but it hurt a little. Stopped on $HE of course. Also $PAR and $MRGE that looked like breakouts in a normal market. Thank you. Ps is there an inverse fund covering the $MDR type companies?
  • jas609: Got an alert on $HE 18.29 any thought?
  • jamesg: $HE - Let's see if there is any support around the 50D EMA.
  • NTheGame: PUTS-CALLS vitaly After some very nice discussions in the forum this weekend, especially from Suzie, it seems that we might expect a bounce from Thursday's low today or tomorrow. Hence your comment about waiting for a bounce to do more #shorting. Do you think there will be any safe sectors, like tech or utilities? I moved out of $XOM into $HE and $MSFT, thinking these were better positioned. Using an IRA account, I can't short stocks right now, can only buy inverse ETFs.
  • gwsmith: $HE : Do any members follow this ? I want to start a postion in a Utility and I like this one. It looks like it is halfway thru it's bounce off the 20ma. We may have more down days coming. Any opinions about entering this stock in a negative biased market?
  • trdollar: $HE Entry point I suggest $18.82 or so...that was the last push down and buy up.
  • trdollar: $HE @Dan mentioned this in the market recap or weekend update recently, and if it can get past 19.25 (prior resistance) it's looking to move nicely to the upside on a volatility #squeeze, even though it's had a nice 60% move up since March. I'm hoping the bulls are in control on this one. Any other views on this one?
  • wahoobjc: $HE & $PFE - HELP $HE - Good morning team! I'm looking for some help on a plan to get into $HE, should I wait for a little pullback or buy some here and see where it goes? If I bought some here would a stop around $17.95 make sense? Any help from some of you more experienced traders out there. Thanks in advance for any insight. $PFE - Looks like it's trying to chew through it's 200 EMA I'm at work so I'll try to check in again before the market opens. Thanks!
  • strickland411: $HE @Dan covered this one in last night's video; I just re-watched it to double check what he said. He didn't address entry points, but he did say that the chart seems set up for a nice move to the upside. As far as an entry ... I would look at the 20DMA as my entry point. It has clearly provided support for the last four days (all of which were up). My suggestion would be to put in a buy order at the 20DMA and see what the market will be willing to give you. I don't see a pre-market price so this must not trade extended hours. All the best.

  • Sizzle: @Dan - #dividend theme segment - $PFE or $BMY, $HE, $ATO or $SO, $VGR or PM, $USB all have decent charts. But 4 with really decent charts given this market and decent dividends are $STLY, $BGG, JTX and KFT.
  • Joelle: I know that he's crazy off the map with emotions ~ but what else I know ~ He is DAMN smart on some of these Issues. $HE lives & breaths Wallstreet business and Stock Market Businesses. He "reads" conference calls and Financial statements "for Fun"! I think he does have a bais ~ He wants the Market to stay UP ! That's his business! But, He understands the resulting consequences better than anyone I've really heard. He's right ~ not hard to believe that. ugh, couldn't help it. I also have credentials in that area and he was one of the few Last year that spoke my language, I thought I was crazy for 2 years before that:) So, he made me feel sane. LOL

  • Ian: $HE Here's one to watch. Hawaiian Electric. On the face of it it's just a utility. However, it also owns a 63 branch Saving and Loan and 226 ATM machines around the islands. Been up three days in a row # that's bad news. Been up 8 out of the last nine days # that's good news At June-hi resistance # bad news Could be going to go through resistance # good news 4.8% #dividend # bonus news At this moment, on the IBD real time list of stocks with volume significantly exceeding the average for the last 50 days # interesting news. @Ian
  • Bob: Team, @Dan's not here to remind us but unless there is a very compelling reason to buy a stock today, it makes a lot of sense to wait and see what the Monday morning action is. He also reminds us that most of the pros take Friday to sell positions and get other house-keeping done...ever wonder why $HE chose Friday to be off ?? :)
  • Sizzle: Suzie, but we all know that if this ISN'T the end that #Cramer will also say he told us it wasn't. And when that's your SOP, its not bravery as much as it's just typical bluster from the guy. And that encapsulates my beef with the guy. He has no problem at all with changing his positions multiple times (people that actually trade on his advice be damned) so that no matter what happens, $HE called it.
  • theturkeybone: So where's the weakness on the Dow coming from? $C has bounced off 26 three times today already. I forget if thats a good sign or a bad one. $UNP looks like it might finally be making a move. Got my dad out of a $MSFT trade and into some $AGU on the dip.. not as low as I wanted, but still at about 85. Well I got an earful after hours, and $HE got an earful pre-market. :)
