  • traderbren: $IBM $TPR - I managed to get short via puts this morning and have now closed those positions. Gotta keep a short leash on shorts in this market. ;-)
  • scottrades: Good morning Team! Futures are up slightly following yesterday's FOMC and some big tech earnings reports from $MSFT, $TSLA, $MSTA, $IBM, $CAT, $TSCO, $NOW and others. It was also really interesting to hear Fed Chair Powell talk about how he had no pr ...

Noticed that you mentioned that we should watch for the bounce of $MSFT. Are you suggesting that we should add $MSFT in case it bounces ? Yesterday (tx to your suggestion) I sold of 1/2 my $MSFT stocks. The stock after hrs went down by $20. Happy to buy back in case you advice. $20/share is a notional profit in case I buy it back
  • kenb: @bigbartabs $IBM great story, and congrats for a successful career. I remember Ross Perot and was aware of EDS, though never had the opportunity to interact with them. I actually voted for Perot when he ran for President of the US.
  • bigbartabs: @kenb $IBM ... if HP hadn't bought us... I might have still been there today, going on 47 years. EDS was a great place to work. But then again... I would have missed all my good forum buddies here in Dan's forum! :)

  • phgruver: $IBM is a long term hold, I really have no choice but to hold through. :-) Take a look at a 30 year chart to see how well I've done.... (the dividends don't hurt either)
  • champ: @phgruver $IBM ....Real nice bounce....and 30 years is a long time because I'm only 32.
  • jeffrhen55: @champ $IBM My first job out of college in 1977 was with IBM. Sold typewriters and didn't know how to type! LOL! Wish I still had the stock purchased pretax at 15% below market!
  • champ: @jeffrhen55 $IBM ...In 1966, I was working for a Office Equipment company and they sold a hell of lot, of those electric-IBM typewriters, everybody wanted electric .....and I used to delivered them and I remember that they were heavy...... .....they came out with those electric typewriters in 1961.... then the first word processor, was named Magnetic...those came out around 1964. ....I remember that things were booming back in those days.....
  • jeffrhen55: @champ $IBM The old Model C and D's were heavy. I think we're dating ourselves Champ!
  • joelsg1: @jeffrhen55 $IBM I still have a working one.
  • champ: @jeffrhen55 $IBM ...Yes for sure and I'm one of those 1944 models and I'm still running really strong, so keep Care of Yourself and don't forget to change your Oil and rotate your tires. Good Luck!
  • bigbartabs: @champ @jeffrhen55 ... $IBM , I had much the same experience, but with magnetic tape drives, hard disk drives, and mainframe computers in all of our US datacenters, starting in 1978 through the 2009.... in our USA east, west, north, south regional datacenters. In the early days, IBM pretty much had a lock on datacenter equipment... then later along came Amdahl, where we finally had competition for big computer iron cost. I remember spending $6 Million for a 6 megabyte solid state disc drive, shared among our duplexed mainframes. The iphones we all have today have more compute power, more storage space, more network speed than the multi millions of dollars in equipment we were running for banks, retail stores, healthcare companies, etc.. Mind boggling the changes over one life time.
  • kenb: @champ $IBM trivia. If I remember correctly, those IBM electric typewriters were branded IBM Selectric typewriters in the 70's when I started working in offices.
  • kenb: @bigbartabs $IBM 70's, my first job was with Western Electric (remember them?) and we had an IBM 360 (which had to be booted from a floppy disk inserted into the console), and the more modern IBM 370 (which actually had a fixed boot disk mounted in the console). That was a big technological advancement). The simple days.
  • phgruver: @kenb $IBM $IBM's earliest word processors hooked into the Selectric II typewriter as the printer. I was a "professional hire" into the PC division. Those were the days of the AT, XT, RT and PC Jr. As I was already around 40, I knew I'd have to supplement my pension with savings, so I kept all the stock I bought. Four times a year, it puts a smile on my face....
  • bigbartabs: @kenb $IBM ... yes, I remember both models. They were what Ross Perot had in all our datacenters when I went to work for him in 1978. Perot worked for IBM as a salesman for years, and then decided to leave and start Electronic Data Systems when he ...
  • joelsg1: $IBM Received new supercomputer from CoreWeave using $NVDA's latest. Back to the 50d, could go either way from here.
  • joelsg1: @joelsg1 $IBM $NVDA If I was super aggressive which I'm not, would intraday short back down to opening gap.
  • joelsg1: @joelsg1 $IBM $NVDA Got the 'can't help its', put on intraday long trade on $SQQQ.
  • joelsg1: @joelsg1 $IBM $NVDA $SQQQ Out for small loss, too cute with $NVDA flying.
  • joelsg1: @joelsg1 $IBM $NVDA $SQQQ Clockwork Orange daytrade, the old In/out/in/out.
  • Bert953: @joelsg1 $IBM $NVDA $SQQQ WOW, gotta go in the wayback machine for that one!
  • woodman: Consumer Electronics Show lineup: Today: Keynote 6:30 PM - $NVDA Tuesday: Robotics Day - $IRBT $SERV $TSLA Wednesday: AI and Metaverse Day - $AMD $META $U $RBLX $CRM Thursday: Quantum Computing - $IBM $RGTI $BTQQF $IONQ - and Sustainability - $TSLA $FSLR Friday: Health & Wellness Tech.
  • woodman: $IBM - completion of "W"
  • phgruver: Good morning, y'all. $IBM reported, after the bell, on Wed. They "beat" on earnings by 7 cents, but missed on revenue and lowered guidance. That resulted in the big gap down yesterday. That was a 6.8% drop, for the day, but it is opening a bit lower this morning. It is right at the 50dma, and the lower Bollinger Band, so it could be a bounce play....
  • X802tp01: $IBM relentless
  • X802tp01: $IBM I know I keep mentioning this but boring and stogy it is NOT. 52 Wk High. Up 2.49% today and 2.85% yield, earnings 10/23.

  • X802tp01: $IBM Making new 52 wk highs and rising
  • phgruver: Good morning, y'all. It's quarterly payday, for several stocks ($IBM, $AEP, $MET). It's so frustrating, though, when the dividends received are dwarfed by recent losses. It's no wonder people feel the market is rigged.
  • PhilHarmonic: $VZ $V $PG $UNH $KO $JNJ $WMT $IBM $TRV Here I list some DJI stocks that are doing well today.
  • Roadrunner: $IBM breaking out on weekly

  • X802tp01: $NVDA $IBM Nice call by Gene Munster on $NVDA... beat and modestly down. $IBM 52 WH > 200. I own this in my DRIP for 44 years collecting dividend. I bought on BO and stop a couple bellow. If it closes above 200 will be looking to add. Also $FIX on BO > 350 PB but continuing to run. Cur 355.80.

  • BarryC: Good Morning!! I'm going to start an $IBM long position today while slowly dipping my toe in the water with some potential new swings.
  • phgruver: FWIW, stodgy old $IBM is up over 4% today on earnings. They reported EPS of $2.43/share vs expectations of $2.20/share, a pretty decent beat. Revenue was $15.77B, a YOY increase of $295M. At the current price, the annual dividend of $6.68/share is a yield of 3.63%. Of course, if you bought your shares at a lower price, (as I did) your personal ROI could be much higher.
  • champ: @phgruver $IBM...#Real-nice-Work and your Old company, just might continuing paying you extra now, especially for the next few weeks or so.... if we were to keep getting the right Economic numbers........ ....and in the morning, we could start a new Market-leg, if we were to get the right number.....and thats how important that number is, however don't tell everyone, only tell your close friends. Good Luck! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  • bigbartabs: @phgruver $IBM ... did you work at IBM?
  • phgruver: @bigbartabs $IBM Yeah, I spent 23 years working for Big Blue. I started buying stock through the Employee Purchase Plan (EPP) as soon as I was eligible. Back then, we got, like, a 15% discount, but we could only buy a certain percentage, I think 7%, of our salary. I always planned for that to be the cornerstone of my retirement. So far, it's worked....
  • bigbartabs: @phgruver $IBM ... we might be birds of a feather. I spent 31 years working for Perot's Electronic Data Systems (EDS)... that included being bought by GM in 1985, then spun back off after a few years later to EDS again... then bought by HP along about 2007, where I stayed a couple more years and retired in 2009. What area were you in with IBM?
  • phgruver: @bigbartabs $IBM I started out in the National Support Center, (first in Atlanta and then in RTP, NC) supporting the PC market, and then, somewhere along the line, got transferred to Global Services. I was an AIX (UNIX) guru, and DB2 database specialist. Along the line I did a bit of C programming, and became quite adept at shell programming as well.
  • joelsg1: $IBM Beat and slight raise, up $6 under $10 implied move ah but they broke out their growing AI consulting business. If it holds, could be a harbinger of at least a bounce.
  • mopick: $IBM, what do you guys think of this chart now???
  • phgruver: @Henry $CMG Good commentary, Henry! I remember that $IBM used to split whenever it got to $145, to keep the price closer to $70/share. This was was partly for affordability, but also to allow long term holders to sell a few shares without feeling like they were selling out of their position. Side note: those splits are how I wound up "overweight" in $IBM stock. I'm still not selling, though. Those dividends are helping finance my retirement....
  • phgruver: $IBM getting whacked, this morning, after reporting Q1. The beat on earnings, but missed on sales. So far, they have given back everything they gained on the last earnings report, and are trading back down at Dec 23 levels. Still, the stock is very near the rising 200dm, FWIW....
  • traderbren: #Gaps - looks like we'll get some gap fills on the downside on $META and $IBM tomorrow.
  • woodman: $IBM sideways into rising 50d
  • Zimzala: $IBM May be early but picked some up at $189.
  • woodman: $IBM drift back down to rising 20d area.
  • traderbren: $IBM - poised to move higher, especially if it clears the 8ema overhead at 193.27
  • X802tp01: $IBM running toward the 2012 high of 203.73. 199 %2B 7.25
  • DAN: ...
So being long $IBIT is no different than being long $IBM (which is also, by the way, moving higher and is less than 10% from its all-time-high). We are up about 36% on our $IBIT trade. What's the difference between our trade on IBIT and our trade ...

  • phgruver: Kyndryl Holdings, $KD, the spin off of IBM Global Services, reported earnings yesterday. They reported a loss of $(0.05)/share vs expectations of $(0.26)/share on revenue of $3.94B vs expectations of $3.92B. This revenue was down YOY from $4.3B, but not bad At this rate, they may become profitable is a few quarters. I got my stock from the spinoff from my $IBM stock, and I've added a bit.....
  • Auto: $XP $MSTR $CLSK $IBM added early staying late
  • djgustoso: @phgruver @Henry $BAH $IBM Thank you for your responses!
  • phgruver: @djgustoso $BAH I had the same problem when I worked for $IBM. I was allowed to purchase stock at, a 15% discount, with a certain % of my salary. Over my 23 years with the company, I built up an outsized position, relative to my other investments. ...
  • Auto: $IBM short from yesterday added premarket watching $189.25 to add again
  • phgruver: FWIW, $IBM reported a beat on earnings and revenue last night. The beats were relatively modest, though. What's driving the stock higher, this morning, is the CEO's statement "Client demand for AI is accelerating...." and other forward looking statements. As I have an outsized position in $IBM, from way below, it's good to see $IBM to get some of it's mojo back. :-)
  • scottrades: Good morning Team! Flat open this morning which isn’t bad considering $TSLA is down a bunch to start the day after reporting Earnings. It’s not all bad though, $IBM, as noted in the forum, is up over 6% after they reported. Lots more Earn ...

  • Henry: @phgruver $IBM Evercore upgrade pt $200
  • phgruver: @oldtimer The only thing green for me was $ABBV. Just now $IBM also went green. That really isn't telling me anything, other than this is a really tough market....
  • joelsg1: $IBM Small trim after huge post-E move.
  • phgruver: $KD, the spin off of Global Services from $IBM, reported better that expected earnings yesterday. They reported a $(0.05) per share loss vs expectations of $(0.63) per share, and revenues of $4.07B vs consensus estimates of $3.95B. The company also raised their outlook for 2024
  • phgruver: FWIW, $IBM reported better than expected earnings, revenue and free cash flow. As a result, the stock is up about 5% today, as the market, in general, is selling off. Not a buy, at these levels, but definitely a hold. The dividend yield is at 4.8%, making it a good stock for a long term portfolio. (I am long from way below)
  • joelsg1: $NVDA $SMCI $IBM today announced it will indemnify users of its generative AI against copyright and other IP claims. Others will have to follow. Good for the first two, long both.
  • camaro69: $IBM Holding it's morning break out

  • joelsg1: $IBM Still riding the 8d even after ex-div yesterday at a nearly 4.7% yield, extended so trailing up stop to a bit below 8d. Another $3 to above $147.62 12/22 high could further juice.
