I'm more of a longer term investor, and try to invest early in sectors that have been out of favor and seem to be getting more visibility and price actions. 3D printing seems to be one of those technologies now that companies are looking to reduce manufacturing costs, and coming out of COVID, have capital funds to purchase one of these expensive printers. Along with borrowing costs at the lowest in this low interest rate environment. I'm also looking at $DDD, $VJET, $XONE in this space.

Each then moved higher thereafter. That remains to be seen with $SSYS. I went small in case I am wrong. Yesterday I added to $XONE in that flag.

- DAN: $XONE $DDD $SSYS $VJET #3D Printing -- careful in these stocks. Note that XONE gapped up this morning and is now trading lower -- at low of the day now. The stock is obviously being sold into this strength. I'm not suggesting that these stocks be avoided. Rather, just noting that there are sellers out there.
- woodman: @DAN $XONE $DDD $SSYS $VJET #3D - I agree, but note what $DDD did the first trading day after it reported the evening earlier. It dove hard, then had an a great intraday bounce putting in a long hammer/doji. It's now on its 5th day of making higher highs and is nearly 30% higher than where it close when it started making the run after earnings (and is nearly 40% higher than that intraday low the day after it reported). So caution is certainly warranted after this kind of pop in $XONE this morning, but I just wonder if $DDD's reaction means anything for $XONE.
- DAN: @woodman $XONE $DDD $SSYS $VJET #3D I understand. I'm not suggesting that these stocks are peaking. I don't think they are. But it's just important that traders realize that, at some point, the aggressive buying will wane and the momentum will stall. Don't know if it's about to happen...or if it'll happen after another 10% advance. I just don't want anyone to be complacent and ultimately buy at the top.

I'm guessing that the reason all these stocks took off at the same time... must be due to some covert news that a big player (maybe more) are looking to purchase 3D technology. - woodman: #3DPrinters - Something I extremely rarely do, I bought a stock -- $XONE -- today *before* earnings, largely based on the Market reaction to $DDD and general move up in the 3D printer stocks. I got lucky. Hopefully the +8% on earnings afterhours holds up tomorrow. Next up tomorrow is $VJET (which started its victory march today). I was going to buy $VJET too but it had moved too much already for me to buy it. The volume in VJET today was 5x the average (50 day) volume. $SSYS reports on 5/16 bmo, but it has already had a nice run.

- DAN: @jojohna $SSYS yes, I see the breakout. The other 3D printers ($VJET, $DDD, $XONE) are all at what appear to be bottoms. As a group, they still have some work to do. Just watch the 50-day MA. Will probably be a cap on this move for a bit.

Will be announced Thursday at Microsoft developer conference. $VJET is the only ticker in this space that is working at all, and it is working well today, up 6%. Perhaps the market is choosing a winner.

- philharmonic: $VJET 0n 02/11/15 I bought this stock @ $9.24. Two days later it made a high of $10.75 and has yet to return to that high. Now I notice that the 3D printer companies are starting to look frisky, and $VJET is almost back to where I bought it. I've only had the stock for two months but it seems like a long time. In November 2013 the stock touched $70.00. Can it get back there this year? It's a long shot.
- dave11: @philharmonic $VJET if you are going to hold onto the stock there will be alot a selling pressure in the 12.50 to 13.49 range, which is the 6 month high. I would re-evaluate at that point. I have no position on $VJET, but am long in the industry by holding a bull put spread on $DDD which expires May 2015.
- philharmonic: @dave11 $VJET I will sell this stock if it goes below $7.00. So my risk is $2.24 times 100 shares = $224. The stock is pretty much at a low compared to its history. I am not planning on selling this stock for a while as it is not tying up a substantial amount of capital. If it goes above $11.00, I will think about buying some more.

- lostsheep: $UNIS,$VJET- probably foolish plays but two spec plays just the same, but both set up pretty well. $UNIS- scanned finviz for ihs patterns with high short interest and this one came up. was pumped as piper jaffrey raised the price target to 10. ran up and sold off back to the 50 day ma and now moving up again. took a position yesterday and added today with a tight stop below the 50. $VJET- german 3d printer company. if they benefit from a weaker euro and germany is ramping up they may benefit. after a pop has pulled back to 50 as well and has held. can't find the data but the short in all these is high so i'm assuming this one is too. entered yesterday and a stop below the 50. both pretty low risk trades. imho

- GreenGhost: Le sector de short squeeze du jour. Easy to push these lower cap heavily shorted names around with thin holiday volumes. $VJET is up 22% for example. This kind of price action happens occasionally at near year end with many funds have already closed their books and trading drops off considerably. 3D printing stocks up strongly 3D Systems ($DDD), Voxeljet (VJET), and ExOne ($XONE) are posting big gains. Stratasys ($SSYS) is up more moderately, but also outperforming. Short interests for the group remain very high: As of Dec. 15, 3D Systems had 35.5% of its float shorted (a 52-week high); Stratasys had 21.7% (ditto); Voxeljet had 17.8%; and ExOne had 44.2%. Canaccord expects a 2015 rebound for 3D printing stocks.
- GreenGhost: $VJET Now out of day trade. It may run further into close but I don't want to be greedy. They squeezed this one real hard today. At HOD ( now)this stock was up over 30% on no news I can see. See earlier post for 3D printer sector short squeeze plays. Todays' up volume is the most this stock has seen for many months suggesting there may be more upside to come. I'll look at it again on Monday.

- GreenGhost: @Jadee $VJET Thanks. There is huge short interest in all these names and they were woeful underperformers in 2014. I think the price action today suggests a combination short squeeze and yesterday's trash is tomorrow's treasure institutional share accumulation. Could be a head start of sorts on a 2015 sector mean reversion type trade. The mean reversion portion commentary is just pure speculation on my part.
