  • phgruver: Utilities, $XLU, $AEP, $D, $DUK, $SO, are holding up well.
  • phgruver: Hey @Dan, I'd love to contribute more, on either forum, but all I'm seeing is more of "nothing to do." None of the issues I watch are setting up. The only thing that I have that is up today are my electric utilities $XLU, $AEP, $D, $DUK, $SO. I guess this is an OK place to initiate or add, but I already have all I want....
  • phgruver: Utilities ($XLU) are catching a bid today. Of the ones I follow, $AEP is doing the best, as it breaks above it's 200dma. $SO and $DUK are both below the 200dma, but climbing. I don't actually follow $ED, but it looks pretty good too. As for $D, I'd say avoid it.
  • phgruver: $D continues to be a drag on the $XLU as a wave of downgrades continue pummel the stock. Ironically, the current price of $D is well below lowered estimates, which run in the $75 range. The 4.26% dividend is well covered by earnings, though, and doesn't seem to be in imminent danger of being cut. Need to see a bottom form before considering investing in $D
  • phgruver: The $XLU is taking a hit today. The main culprit seems to be $D, which is down 6+ %, after multiple downgrades. $D is "reviewing" their business, from top to bottom. Of the utilities I follow, $D is the most problematic with questionable leadership, from my perspective. It isn't particularly investor friendly....
  • phgruver: Utilities, $XLU, are a little soft, this morning, but seem to be building a base. This may be a good entry point for someone looking to build up the income portion of their long term portfolio. You don't get much capital appreciation in utilities, but the dividends are steady and reliable. Pullbacks, such as this, are relatively rare opportunities to add. While they certainly could go lower, the relatively high yield puts a bid under them whenever they pull back. In my long term accounts, I am long $AEP, $D, $DUK and $SO. Of these, I like $D the least, but it also seems to have the most upside potential. RHRN, I would probably be most inclined to add to $DUK.
  • cmaxwel1: @phgruver $XLU $AEP $D $DUK $SO (I have a position in $XLU that I am adding to)
  • phgruver: The utilities, $XLU, but specifically $AEP, $D, $DUK, $SO are getting a bid, today, after selling off since 9/13/22. The initial heavy volume has tapered off, somewhat, but the price seems to be holding well above Friday's low. You don't invest in $XLU for capital appreciation, but you do look for selloffs as entry points for #VALUE and income. The utilities, generally, work like bonds providing a steady stream of income with minimal capital risk. This recent selloff was triggered by the view that bonds will become more attractive as yields increase. Is this the bottom for the $XLU? Hard to say, but with $DUK yielding 4.51%, I can't see income investors letting it go much lower. $AEP is at 3.76%, $D is at 4.15%, and $SO yields 4.24%.
  • phgruver: @phgruver $spy $HBAN #cash #VALUE I also added to $D. That's my least favorite utility, but the entry is good. I don't think it is as well managed as my other utilities, and it operates in an extremely challenging environment, the state of VA, but, again, the dividend is attractive and appears safe.
  • phgruver: My best performing sector, today is Utilities ($XLU). Of those I actually follow, $DUK and $D are actually at reasonable buy points, rebounding off the 50DMA, and just above the 200DMA. I can't really recommend the sector, though, because of politics. Simply put, as electric bill rise, and as political temperatures rise, the utilities tend to become political footballs. Everybody hates the power company! If you have the stomach for it, though, and are looking to add consistent income to your long term portfolio, you might start/add a small position here, and look to add more if headlines drive them lower.

  • Docoof: @woodman $D Thank you for your detailed response. Your frankness in saying what you see and then explaining why is invaluable to me. Like those of bRobert, I read all your instructive posts and I’m very appreciative of your patience and willingness to teach.

  • Docoof: @bRobert or @woodman Can you comment on a stock that looks like it could be starting to break out of a (roughly) 7-8 year base? The stock is $D. It traded at its 1-yr high today and is around 12% off of its ath on 2/25/2020. Dividend ~ 3.3% and Ex-Div date is 3/3/2022. Thank you in advance.

  • ciki: @dan What do you think of $D
  • ciki: @bRrobert What is your take on $D and $wdc
  • bRobert: @ciki $D $wdc WDC. Long term hold. Patient. Let it breathe with a partial. ADD with a pullback/bounce ABOVE the breakout area. $D. Breakdown post acquisition and . throwback to underside. of 50/200d. Not for me This was a long time hold for a while
  • phgruver: @Kharrison67 Good dividend stocks change frequently, because they get overbought. Right now, the utilities $AEP, $DUK, $SO look pretty good, but $D has some question marks that need to be resolved before it's considered "safe". Some of the large pharma names , $ABBV, $BMY, $GSK, $PFE, also look good. $GSK and $ABBV are both in the 5% range on payout. Check the quarterly earnings against the dividend to make sure they can cover it. The BSD's and REIT's that usually dominate the income space aren't particularly safe, right now, because we don't know how badly the COVID displacement will hurt their earnings. High yielders aren't ever "safe" investments, but they have their place in an income portfolio. When all else fails, buy the $SPY or the $QQQ, after it's had a bad day or two.
  • Wolf: @phgruver $D $BRK #VALUE Might be good for a dead cat bounce today.
  • Henry: @ReneeH $BRKB $D on CNBC RHRN
  • phgruver: OK, $D is down 6%, this morning, but it's because the company announced a dividend cut from $3.76/year to $2.50/year. The reason given was a reduction in the revenue stream from the $BRK-B deal. I have been a PSNC natural gas customer, for several years. About a year ago, $D bought out PSNC and I became a $D customer. It's not clear to me, yet, if the retail gas distribution network was included in the deal, but I'm beginning to suspect that it was. Anyway, let $D settle out, for a couple of days, and then revisit as a possible #VALUE investment. Electric utilities are pretty reliable dividend payers, although I'm expecting some pressure from regulators for rate, and dividend cuts.
  • shoredriver: $BRKB $D....Uncle Warren buys $D's gas transmission and storage assets for 10b........
  • ReneeH: @shoredriver $BRKB $D Curious how underlying $D prices might move as a result since this is an divested asset purchase? Just happen to have July calls.
  • phgruver: @ReneeH @Henry $BRKB $D $DUK https I live in the service area of both these utilities, and own both in my LT account. Basically, I agree with Henry, in that they are seeing the the current regulatory climate as unfriendly to the project, and don't wish to waste any more resources pursuing it until thing change. I can't see this decision as having any negative impact on the stock price, especially as both sold off significant'y in March, and are currently trading a last September's prices. If I weren't looking at some other opportunities, I would be tempted to add to my existing positions. Both are cash cows that pay a significant dividend.
  • ReneeH: @phgruver $BRKB $D $DUK appreciate the insight very much! Thank you. The chart looked fantastic couple weeks ago, we’ll see where the Chips land when I close this trade tomorrow. Always grateful for the expertise and input.

  • Motorman: @bRobert $D Divvie 4.5% ;)
  • phgruver: @babas Not @Dan, but I am primarily a long term #VALUE investor that is learning to trade short term. Most of my investments are semi-permanent, and generate significant income to fund my retirement. That said, I took advantage of the recent weakness to add to my positions in $D and $PFE. All the utilities are a little beaten down, but I particularly like $D, but I would also consider $SO on any pullback or sign of weakness. As for the drug companies, $PFE is buy-able RHRN. The divy is 4.56%. $BMY isn't quite as attractive, at 3.17%, and I also hold $ABBV at 5.12%. These last 2 didn't pull back as much as $PFE did, but all are, IMHO, good LT investments.
  • babas: @phgruver $D $PFE $SO $BMY $ABBV #VALUE Thank you for your advice. Not very close to retiring myself, the way things are going, but trying to prepare.
  • Danzguy: @babas $D $PFE $SO $BMY $ABBV #VALUE Good plan, man! I studied Dan, and others, for ten years before I retired. It gave me a heck of a jump start on my retirement hobby. The hard part is forcing myself to exercise! You just HAVE to do that! Trade'em well!
  • bRobert: $XLU has quietly broken out $D. squeeze out $90+.......
  • phgruver: @bRobert $XLU $D I added to my $D position this week. It has the most promising chart, and the best risk/reward of the utilities that I follow. I also own $AEP, $DUK, $SO. Steady Eddie income producers.
  • bRobert: @phgruver $XLU $D $AEP $DUK $SO YES. $D. my favorite chart Very easy to hold $ED. off the floor Good swing trade utility due to volatility It always recovers
  • phgruver: This market is putting me to sleep! Nothing I'm in seems to want to move out of it's established channel. I did add a bit to my LT $D position. It's trading in a tight channel. The BB's are at 5.6%, and have been tightening for a couple of weeks. Utilities are out of favor, right now, (see $XLU), but this one pays a 4.78% dividend, with the next x-div coming up on 6/4. Adding a bit of reliable quarterly income to my retirement portfolio. I also added a bit more to my $NLOK position. It's just chopping sideways, but, as long as it stays north of $20, it should be OK. The ATH is the recent high of $21.88. I don't expect this to explode higher, like a biotech, but a move up to $24, or maybe $26, over the next month, would seem to be a reasonable expectation.
  • phgruver: Utilities are doing well today as well. $XLU is up 3%. I'm holding $AEP (+1.36%), $D ( 1.9%) $DUK ( 2.53%) and $SO ( 3.46%) Remember, that all these pay significant dividends, and their business models won't be too severely impacted by COVID-19. I hold all these in long term investment accounts. These are not trades.
  • bRobert: $D. Squeezing over the 50d. Near 5% dividend.+ $90 potential.
  • phgruver: @bigbartabs $CVX $XOM My opinion is probably not, but, if oil recovers to the mid $30's, then this price war will just be a blip on the radar. The other stocks I listed $D $GSK $DUK $IBM $PFE are all reasonably safe, although nothing is safe in this environment. It all depends on how long the govt. keeps the economy shut down.
  • bigbartabs: @phgruver @champ $CVX $XOM $D $GSK $DUK $IBM $PFE ... big oil dividends... why would we think that dividends are safe with oil in the basement? Can they really keep paying dividends?
  • champ: @bigbartabs $CVX $XOM $D $GSK $DUK $IBM $PFE --- For me, I'm only trading. There was a post yesterday by @issues @ 03:22 pm, see his post about dividends because for me, thats only a plus but I'm only Day-trading and Swing-Trading and I'm not doing that for any dividends. I'm not thinking about or even care about dividends for now, in this type of market. .....You need to talk to @issues because he cares, I don't. LOL
  • bigbartabs: @champ $CVX $XOM $D $GSK $DUK $IBM $PFE ... not caring about dividends... me either. Dividend cuts are likely to start emerging soon. Probably in volume.
  • phgruver: @champ @issues $CVX $XOM I don't like oil, for other reasons, but I tend to agree with your approach. Lots of reliable companies are paying outsized dividends because of the selloff. $D=5.38%, $GSK=5.48%, $DUK=4.87%, $IBM=6.16%, $PFE=4.79%, and the list goes on. I would prefer to pick up these established cash cows, than take on added risk by going for high yield. With these established companies, you are looking at capital gains of 100%, over the next year or two, as well as outsized dividends, and minimal risk. The best of both worlds.
  • phgruver: @mikey1942 $DUK All the utilities are getting crushed! I also have $AEP, $D and $SO. Just take a look at $XLU, though, and you see the picture. Electric utilities aren't going out of business (except maybe in Cal.), but they may be forced, by regulators, to cut their dividends. Also, governments are moving to deny utilities the ability to cut off service for non-payment, (most have already implemented non-cutoff policies on their own) and may even go toward debt forgiveness. Right now, though, I really thing utilities are oversold.
  • michaelH: @Forexpro $SPY $XLU #Utilitiees #utilities That is helpful, thank you. Watching for now, but a few are on my radar: $AEP, $POR, and $D. I think the divergence you speak of will benefit the group.
  • phgruver: @ckonelli $XLU I had intended to add to both my $DUK and $AEP, this week, but ended up diversifying by buying $D. It sports a better dividend at the current price. All are pretty "safe," but a bit extended. The big pullback last week was a gift, but I wasn't ready, so I couldn't take advantage of it. Utilities have been a bit extended since last Sept., and hard to buy....
  • bRobert: $D. Long term hold. Nh. $100 target.
  • Scruffy: $D $DUK - bRobert has been all over recommending $D (which I own) but take a look at $DUK. What a ride that one has been on for a utility stock. Long, long term holder of both and could not be happier.
