It would piss off a lot of top brass at IBM, but they were going to get it anyway. Maybe Whitehurst can get the elephant to dance again.

  • DrScience: @shoredriver $DVMT $VMW Kind of hard for $VMW to buy it's owner. But, in this convoluted world (public/private/quasi-private), of $DVMT, $EMC, and $VMW, I guess patricide is a possibility.
  • champ: $DVMT --- @Dan....new ATH and was HOD. The stock could BreakOut, even more, its trying but only time will tell. The earnings stats looked really good and the $EMC transaction is now closed. I'm guessing, the stock is going to move even higher now with $EMC on board..? ....still holding....are you..?
  • CHOFF: @champ $DVMT $EMC - I'm in at 67.56 and holding until I see signs otherwise. They don't report for another two weeks on 9/7 and positive news from their industry competitors has the wind at their back for now.
  • champ: @CHOFF $DVMT $EMC ---- All should be positive....all systems are on track and your also right about the #NewsFlow....very positive...and I'm also still holding....LOL
  • DAN: @champ $DVMT $EMC No, I am not holding $DVMT. I hate that stock! Here's why: On 8/17, I put a reminder in my calendar to buy the stock. Liked the setup. Totally missed my reminder. Forgot all about it until this morning. So now I can't buy it because it's gone too far, and the gods of Wall Street will surely punish me if I buy the stock right now. Maybe Monday if it pulls back. If I owned it, I'd let the position ride. I do think it's going higher. I just missed the opportunity. Glad you own it, champ. You'll make good money! --DAN

  • AB: @grcjr $EMC - what happens if you own the stock?
  • grcjr: @AB $EMC - you should get your money $24.05 per share (check your broker). Dell will continue to hold a position in $VMW and will set up a tracking stock I'm told is $DVMT to track that ownership. I do not know how the tracker will work or what it really means.

  • Ajax4Hire: $EMC Bought 2016-10Oct $29 calls for $0.41. wow, that seems a small price to pay for a Volatile squeeze potential. And the Call-to-Put ratio clearly shows a strong bias to the upside.
  • DCorion: @Ajax4Hire $EMC Be aware that Dell is purchasing EMC and taking it private. I dont recall the price of buy-out & still needs approvals but i believe the target date for merger is end of Aug. VMW - of which EMC owns majority stake, will remain public.
  • Ajax4Hire: @DCorion $EMC Purchase will be at a premium to today's price. So I am expecting the purchase price will be greater than $29.41. I get to reap any gain above 2.2% of today's price.
  • barbjim12: @DCorion $EMC What is your source for the purchase? I like the idea and would want to cash in.
  • Ajax4Hire: @barbjim12 $EMC @Dan StockMarketMentor.com, select the "Stock" section, currently $EMC is the last to have a "Price Alert" at $28.75. Watch Dan's video for more details by clicking on the "EMC", but be warned, it takes a looooooong time for the video to load (long in internet time).
  • Chucky: $VMW $EMC Dan has mentioned in videos lately. I've been a holder and trading around both positions during the takeover. Type in stock symbol in search and you can see good info. from members this past year. $EMC voters approved deal in Jul. The original offer when announced was $33.15/share when $VMW was trading at 78.65. Still trading at a discount. Just wanted to make sure members are aware $EMC is tied to $VMW share price with the Dell takeover. (24.05 cash and .111/share $VMW) According to NY Post, China approved this week. No formal announcement from Dell or $EMC. But this is the last regulatory hurdle to close this year most likely. Hope all are enjoying the last weeks of August.
  • captron: $EMC - Breaking out today on strong volume.
  • DrScience: @captron $EMC That's because they had fabulous earnings, they own 80% of $VMW which blew out their earnings, and Dell wants them. Shareholders are liking all the good news, but the stock has had trouble with the $30-level.
  • Alexandra: A friend of mine who works for DELL says they will buy $EMC within 6 months. He said DELL is moving into the cloud space in a big way.
  • Forexpro: @Alexandra #Oil, $EMC

    You're Always Welcome, Alexandra,

And yes, although I'm billing some hours, it is nonetheless a very pleasant weekend. I hope and trust that you're experiencing the same. The $EMC deal is done; it will close in the next two-th ...
  • bigbartabs: @Forexpro $EMC ... I spent 31 years with EDS / HP, of which we used a massive amount of EMC storage equipment. It even boggles my mind as to the price of this acquisition. And amplified by the fact that a private company is able to muster that kind of dough. That is one big number... for a largely commodity oriented vendor. Dwelling on service (not the hardware) will have to be the saving grace...but even then covering 67 Billion is hard for me to see how that will end well. FWIW...
  • Forexpro: @bigbartabs $EMC Thanks, Bigbartabs, Yeah, my sense of the deal now is the same as it was at the time of the initial announcement; Michael Dell, faced with no appealing options, decided to throw the dice and attempt to do a "transformative" deal. Egregiously overpaying for the acquisition won't help, and while I know much less about this stuff than do you, yeah, it appeared that what he was buying was a largely commoditized business with its own issues that won't be solved by a combination with DELL. It isn't my problem in an immediate sense, but anticipating loss of jobs, income etc. for a fair number of local people isn't all that pleasant. Here's hoping that you're well, and thriving. All the best!

  • Alexandra: @Forexpro $EMC Oh, and he also said $MSFT is the best at cloud storage. Is that true ? Who is the best at cloud storage? Thanks for all your input as always. Weather is beautiful out here and I will be returning to the pool. They are having a DJ today. Lots of Hollywood industry types. Should be interesting.
  • Alexandra: @shoredriver $EMC Thanks for responding. I guess it's too late to act. But it does get me thinking about buying cloud storage companies.

  • Alexandra: @champ $EMC $IBM You read my mind. I was hoping I would see him again at the pool today so I could ask him about $IBM. No such luck. 😞
  • Alexandra: @Forexpro $EMC $MSFT $AMZN The pool was fun despite sunburn. I'm meeting lots of new and interesting people. I didn't know $AMZN is in the cloud storage space. I wish I had purchased more months ago. I met a man that trades interest rates on bonds or some such thing. I didn't quite understand what he was saying. He spent 20 years on wallstreet at Lieman Brothers and Bear Sterns. Anyways, thank you for your posts this weekend. Should be an interesting day tomorrow.
  • Chucky: $EMC $VMW I posted in previous days. Still trading at a discount. appx. 6-7% $VMW price is riding the 8DMA after the gap in APR.and crossed above the 200DMA. The rise in stock price give me confidence the deal will go through this year. $VMW price at time of announcement was $78.65. Holding $EMC stock and $VMW Aug calls.
  • Chucky: $EMC - looks like the arbitrageurs are buying as it is still appx. Appx. 8% below original offer at 33.15 when $VMW was trading at 78.65. Dell deal looks a little more certain.
  • Prazan: Lots of volatility in this sub-sector, but also lots of enthusiasm. Flash storage offers huge performance benefits over disks. Of the three I've followed – $NMBL, $VMEM, and $PSTG – $PSTG holds the most promise. $VMEM and $NMBL have both cratered due to growth concerns. I don't see much of a moat in this sector. Lots of other small players are competing for position, in addition to the disk storage vendors $EMC and $NTAP. Somebody else comes out with a better product, then $PSTG could crater as well. But their growth trajectory looks better, and the chart holds promise.
  • Forexpro: Re: $GE I'm fairly long this pooch; separately, the Globe reports that the company will announce a move to Boston for its headquarter staff, a boon, presumably, for local real estate prices. Might make up for $EMC's travails, although $EMC also has sizable facilities in the area. CEO Immelt can drive to Dartmouth football games instead of having to take the 'copter! The trigger, according to the paper, was a hike in CT corporate taxes. Hard to believe that MA won a contest on that field. All the best!
  • michaelH: @Forexpro $GE $EMC Yea, Taxachusetts! But Imelt use to live in the Berkshires!
  • Chucky: #market I'm on a quick break from grand jury duty and noticed a little dip. My guess is Yellen must of jawboned a Dec. rate hike. IMHO It's all talk. Might hedge a little in portfolio. $ATML, $EMC two stock I sold on buyouthigher price are now selling at 14% discount. If time permits I might take an option play on both for cashflow. Just called back into jury service. Happy trading.
  • Chucky: @judysteiner $ATML Keep in mind, like $EMC of which both I own are now arbitrager plays.
  • Prazan: $PSTG Keep an eye on this new IPO in the flash storage management business. Up 8% today after a flat debut, likely on the news that $DELL is buying $EMC, from whom PSTG (PURE STORAGE) hopes to take share. Not sure where it goes from here but I may take a small position.
  • Chucky: $EMC - $33.15/Share 24.05/share cash and $9.10 stock tracking $VMW. I think it comes to .111/share. Too early in morning for me to calc. $VMW down in pre-mkt. Will sell my common closer to 30. FWIW Might be good for Tucci and executives but I would expect some layoffs.
  • Forexpro: @Chucky $EMC $VMW Thanks, Chucky, Yeah, it's an interesting structure. Prior to the announcement, the market said that roughly half of $EMC's value resided in its holding of $VMW ($EMC's stake is worth about $27 bn as of Friday's close, and $EMC's market value, again as of Friday, was c. $53.6 bn). A lot of bonds need to be sold. Congrats on owning this; best of luck with it going forward!
  • Chucky: $EMC Woke up to two reports from yesterday. Fortune: Dell to offer 27.50/share Bloomberg West: Possibly $33/share. Sold out of my Options yesterday for a quick gain. BOUGHT PRE On Sept. 3, VP and CFO Robert D Scherich bought 10,000 shares at an average price of $7.54. The price of the stock has decreased by 13.66%. Horsehead Holding has a market cap of $368.875 million and its shares were traded at around $6.51. The company has a P/S ratio of 0.78 MY PURCHASE WAS 33 PER CENT CHEAPER THAN HIS BUT HE ALREADY KNOWS WHAT THE NOVEMBER REPORT LOOKS LIKE Officers and Directors sell for many reasons but they only buy for 1 reason-they think their stock is going up. Today Bloomberg confirmed it: China has largely blown through the zinc surplus. My contention is that the CFO already knew what thje forward order book looked like.
  • Forexpro: @debeers $EMC $ZINC Thanks, DeBeers, Yes, $ZINC looks like a classic reversal with ample room to roam; the metal was also mentioned prominently on Bloomberg Surveillance this morning, as $GLEN.L is heavily involved, and benefiting from the move. http://schrts.co/MvW5Kh Best of luck with these, as always!

  • Lavrock: @fishpatience $EMC $EMCI - The company that will split its stock is $EMCI which has announced a 3:2 split. It is a property and casualty insurance group. The company was founded in 1911. Average trading volume is 12,864 shares a day which may help explain why they are splitting the stock. Currently, all trades are by prior appointment. $EMC, is not splitting its stock and has no relationship with $EMCI. Very confusing!

  • Jadee: Based on my earlier rant I went and looked at $EMC. Seems like it is hanging below the bottom BBand and is finding resistance at the 25.60 area. Regardless my feeling for a rise in tech in the second quarter and beyond it seems to me $EMC will probably bounce then fall off the cliff. I am a better fundamental than technical guy so anyone who can fill in the blanks please do. • DrScience: @Forexpro $MSFT XBox Christmas sales will be the headline number, and Office will be a read on how well the company is capturing the, so called, Post-PC Desktop. And, (Shrug) who knows what Windows 10 will do for the bottom line... But, the real tell, IMO, will be the strength of corporate sales in their Cloud Services offerings. The company has been making significant inroads into what had traditionally been $VMW/$EMC, $CRM, etc. bailiwick. Mr. Softy's partnership with $ORCL has been beneficial to both parties, and if Oracle's hardware-side earnings and forecast translate well for Microsoft's software offerings, we should see a resumption of the uptrend. I think we can buy weakness on earnings. I'm using the 200 DMA as a line in the sand.

  • Jadee: $IBM says they will make a major business announcement along with earnings tomorrow morning 7AM ET. What could it be? Splitting the biz a la $HPQ? Buying $EMC? Layoffs?? A new Jeopardy challenge? Maybe good for a day trade.
  • Forexpro: @1Boston330 , $HPQ, $EMC Thanks, 1Boston330, In addition, although merger talks with $EMC reportedly ended inconclusively, an amalgamation without $HPQ's printer business might make more sense. A combination might still be 1 1=1.5 rather than 3, but Meg Whitman has played a poor hand deftly and (assuming that she retained the top role in a combined firm) it could be interesting. With that said, I'm not involved in either ticker at the moment. Hope you're doing well; all the best.

  • bullmoose: $TKMR, $GPRO, $EMC, $TLT, $LUV, $IWM - I've been raising cash over the past few days and today has been ugly for quite a few of the stocks I still hold (can I scream $YELP). But, $TKMR has been a tremendous winner today. $TLT, which I mentioned as a buy on Friday, is also adding to gains. I do not own $EMC or $GPRO, but both are relatively strong. $EMC is worth watching closely as it is trying to pop out of a squeeze. I bought Oct puts on $LUV this morning. It is somewhat higher on news that Elliott Management, fresh from its legal triumph over Argentina, is expected to press for a breakup of the company. I'm agnostic as to whether the business case makes sense or not, but there's no doubt that the stock has been something of a laggard (the right hand scale shows the stock;s performance, and that of the SPX, in percentage terms): http://tos.mx/BYfgVZ Here is the overnight chart: http://tos.mx/44wYU5 I'm interested in the potential impact on local housing prices should Elliott's efforts succeed, but I remain unenthused about the stock. • Forexpro: Re: $EMC Hi, Friends, I'm not involved in this at present, but it's a large local employer (HQ is in the town adjacent to mine), and thus of interest. Despite the dividend increase (to 0.115, brings the yield to roughly 1.75$ at the current price) it isn't a great report. Free cash flow was down during the quarter (although still quite positive), and administrative and other expenses were up considerably more than were sales, resulting in reduced operating leverage. The market response looks justified, and I certainly wouldn't be in a rush to buy this: The current price, marked on the chart by the white oval, is right around where support would be expected, so a move much below there during the regular session wouldn't be a great sign, either: http://tos.mx/xh8omy We'll see how it goes; all the best.
  • DrScience: $EMC reported EPS inline and revenue beat, guidance cut. IT costs pressure businesses to seek lower-cost alternatives, and public cloud offerings continue to challenge EMC's proprietary solutions. $VMW earnings report last night echos the difficulties. Looks like a dividend increase will help support the stock, but not enough to push the stock into the 30's as analysts had expected. I look for EMC to fall out of the channel -- gonna be a long summer.
  • Forexpro: @DrScience, $EMC Thanks, DrScience, I took a cursory look at the financials, although when I went to the website, they were only showing year on year comparisons. Basically, sales expense, administrative and other costs were up by considerably greater percentages than were sales; also, free cash flow was down considerably in the course of the quarter, although it remains large and positive. I agree that the dividend hike is something of a bone tossed to investors, but at 1.75%, roughly, I doubt that it's enough to sway the unconverted. As you suggest, it could take a while for this one to regain traction. Hope you're faring well; all the best.
  • DrScience: $VMW reports after the bell, $EMC in the morning. $VMW has 14% short interest, so a beat is likely to fire off a short squeeze, and take $EMC for the ride tomorrow. Pivotal initiative for "Big Data" storage and analytics is gaining traction, especially across the telecom space and both companies stand to benefit from announced telecom cap-ex spending this year. The market is definitely taking an interest, but caution reigns as both companies are sitting near their converging 20 and 50 DMA's.
