  • Forexpro: @joelsg1 $SPY $STT Hey, Joelsg1, And the very happiest of New Years to you! What area of $STT is your son considering? Custody, Global Markets, or Global Advisors? They're pretty distinct culturally and the financial implications vary. Happy to try to provide some color, although I'm not as plugged in as I was once upon a time. The topmost echelon has turned over completely since my day. • Forexpro: Re: $STT Good Morning, Friends, Money is no longer free, and the market in consequence is cheering $STT's decision to walk away from its acquisition of BBH's investor servicing (custody) business. In a free-money environment I suspect this move would have been seen as a negative - it was $STT's best shot at adding significant AUC, with associated economies of scale - but things have changed since the deal was announced back in 1898. Actually, it was Sep. 2021, it just seems longer. Fewer regulatory headaches for $STT absent the BBH deal, less need to sell (increasingly expensive) debt. Were I a partner at BBH, which I most assuredly am not, I'd be annoyed, but according to the press reports there are no penalties to be paid by either side. Although as an alumnus of $STT I remain an interested observer, I have no position. All the best!

  • Forexpro: Re: $BK Hi, Friends, The trust banks are sometimes neglected, but $BK and $STT are both up 5+ percent, $NTRS 4 percent, on the back of $BK's results. If I'm not mistaken, $STT reports tomorrow, $NTRS on Wednesday. Be it noted that $BK has made it back to the 50 percent retracement of the Sept 15 45.01 high to Oct 13 36.22 low. Oct 13 wasn't all that long ago, but moves end at some point, generally speaking. Anyway, no position apart from a daughter employed at $BK but interested in the sector where I spent a goodly chunk of my career, albeit at $STT. • Forexpro: Re: $STT Hi, Friends, $STT is doing a tech presentation at some $JPM financials conference today. According to SeekingAlpha, the company indicated that it anticipates revenue growth of 4-5 percent over the medium term, which I would expect is a 3-5 year horizon. That's about where the company has been (although it looks to be somewhat lower than Street guesstimates), and if management can achieve that goal, it probably constitutes good news (or at least "not as bad as feared") under present circumstances. I looked over the slides, and didn't see that snippet, but I could have missed it, or it could have been a verbal contribution. The CFO (Eric Aboaf, well after my time) is part of the presenting team. Anyway, the stock, in which I have no position, is attempting to pull itself off the mat. We'll see how it goes. All the best!

  • Forexpro: Re: $CS, $STT Hi, Friends, Okay, I know, I've been gone for quite a while, and I'm unacquainted with the current CEO (an ex-Fidelity guy). So, perhaps I'm completely wrong about the culture of the place. However, a SeekingAlpha piece suggesting that $STT is interested in acquiring $CS is the looniest thing I've heard since whenever. Synergies? Well, $CS might have some custodial accounts, and it manages a fair amount of money. Let's see, $STT's experience in managing high net worth is ... zero? $CS isn't making much money, and the stock is cheaper than it was a while back, but that's true for $STT, as well. Perhaps a unit of $CS, something complementary, at least potentially, to $STT's existing skill set? That could be, but a buyout of the entire enterprise? Never say never, but I'll be gobsmacked if this rumor pans out. All the best!
  • Forexpro: Re: $STT Hi, Friends, Bleary-eyed this morning, out too late with some old $STT friends, too much wine (Breca Garnacha, a very pleasant Spanish red), too little food. Anyway, I gather informally, and with no numbers provided, that the FX desks continue to make money hand over fist. Not the biggest contributor in Dollar terms to the bank's results, but because of the significant operating leverage -"It don't take any longer to write a couple of extra zeros" - back in my day 60 percent of FX trading revenue dropped to the bottom line. With volumes up and electronic trading reducing costs (well, apart from IT, but the big hit was taken some years ago) I would imagine that percentage is even higher now. All of which is not to deny that the attached chart is, to use the technical term, "crappy". FWIW; all the best!

  • Forexpro: Re: $C Hi, Friends, I just skimmed over the article, but I gather that some of $C's derivatives holdings have been determined to require larger capital reserves than were previously thought necessary. In consequence, the bank is halting stock repurchases for a while. If the CFO mentioned for how long, I missed it. This is another very large, complex organization that of late can't seem to get out of its own way. It has had some really colorful snafus, and the regulators are of course now all over it, which makes it that much tougher to re-establish a degree of operational equilibrium. Back in my day, one of the two leading players in FX, along with $DB. $STT was "Top 10", but way behind "Top 2". No position in either $C or (you're kidding, right?) $DB. • Forexpro: Re: Banks Hi, Friends, Trading revenue for the largest banks ($JPM, $BAC, $C, $GS, $MS) is expected to be down close to be 30 percent when results are reported this week. Bloomberg.com points out that, as shown in the attached chart, investment banking revenue has been robust. Unfortunately, these numbers almost certainly won't suffice to make up for the trading shortfalls (assuming that those guesstimates are close to correct). Some investment bankers, however, will be looking for big pay days, and that always warms my heart. I (only half-) jokingly suggested back in the day that we ask everyone in sales and trading to estimate their individual contributions to $STT's results, because when we added up those numbers we'd find ourselves with at least double the revenue we actually reported. • Forexpro: @debeers $STT $SIVB Thanks, Lady DeBeers, $STT tries this sort of "peer to peer" thing from time to time, as clients find it appealing in the abstract. The problem is that with market makers/intermediaries removed, there's no obligation on the part of anyone to do anything to make a trade actually happen. The people at client shops also have to become acquainted with new software and procedures, which makes them unhappy, and eventually - at least in my experience, admittedly now some years old - the initiatives just sort of fade away, and an SVP sees the dream of making EVP dissolve into mist. Someone has a title that includes "Collateral Transformation"? Really? That should be taken out and shot on general principles, to paraphrase Vincent Vega in "Pulp Fiction". And you are right. There are “quiet” periods when you can’t exercise...before earnings, major product announcements, anything considered inside info.
