I think you are spot on with "buy the close sell the open." If you watch your trading account, it typically peaks early in the morning and then trails off during the day. Can't sell every position at the open because that would make us "night traders"...but it's absolutely a dynamic that people must understand. If you don't, your timing will just stink and you won't be getting the most out of your efforts! Thank you!! 8-) Dan

  • Trixie: @Bridget $IYR do the top holdings influence the way these trade or are the mostly traded independently w their own market created.. I have looked into the top holdings of the $IYR and they have $SPG, $AMT, $PSA, $CCI, $EQIX, $PLD, $HCN, $AVB,$WY,$EQR. there are more housing related reits further down the list.. (we all know retail is struggling so with $SPG being the largest holding i can understand why the IYR would be doing poorly.) or am I trying to analyze / think too much on this.. I have found the website of the IYR.. https://www.blackrock.com/investing/products/239520/ishares-us-real-estate-etf

  • kat: #yieldhogs @Jan2138, what do public offerings mean to someone as inexperienced as myself... the price coils will likely coil awhile? Also, any suggestions on any longs? I have had my eye on $NLY for awhile, but assume it needs to find its bottom. This morning I was reading about $AVB, $EQR, $AIV, $UDR, however I also realize there has been recent news on #REITs making them a bit "iffy" at this time. I don't want to miss out on real estate, so I am thinking maybe $HD, $LEN, and/or XHB. Not sure if these will just keep going up or should wait for a dip. Have been thinking about buying a small house to possibly sell in a few years, but not sure I am ready for the long commitment or the time consuming responsibilities.

  • jojo1480: NXPI- scottdipietro, held my position in NXPI. Soldout of $AVB BIDU $VECO, and I trimmed quite a few position 20-40% ended with a higher cash position into the weekend. I increased a little to $BRCM QSII $KRA KBH and CREE. Closed out $AAPL spreads as the gains are almost @max. Still holding about 20 equity position, hard to eliminate some positions due to the chart.
  • tizuta: $AVB - ripping relatively high short interest.
  • jasper: $THC, $UNH, $TEVA, $VRSN, $TAP, $AVB, $AET, $CTAS, $DOV, $HCP, $FAST, $AET, $DGX, $KR, $NEE, $ORLY - Not sure why anyone might feel the need to start any new longs today, but here is a handful of possible set-ups some people may wish to study over the weekend. They looked like they had some volume and trend line or moving average support. At least to my untrained eye. Hope everybody has a good weekend
  • Poppy: REIT - @Dragonfly Are you looking for stocks like $AVB, EQR? They are companies that invest in real estates particularly apartments. They buy/maintain/rent apartments. They are not #yieldhogs, dividends are paltry 2-4%, maybe. hope this helps @poppy
  • jasper: $IYR components. Tombstone reversals? at support? beginning Phase3? - $IYR (iShares US Real Estate) components $EQR, $BXP, $AVB, $PSA, and $SPG look like possible longs. Decent volume versus their average daily. Major indexes DJIA, S&P and Naz bottom-ticked their closes on Tuesday. Futures up 0.25% +- near midnight. Expiration week usually has at least one pretty good up day.
  • ALBERTAGUY: WEEKEND UPDATE - 3% Rule. I had a look at a few SP-500 gainers from Friday that within 3% above the 50 DMA. I also limited the list to those that showed a bullish engulfing pattern on a day where the index was down for the day. $SWN, $AVB, $EQR, $NOV, $BHI, $PSA & $SLB (the exception). I would like to put a buy strategy together around these markets and would like to ask for some help from the forum. Thanks in advance! AlbertaGuy (noob)
  • rcline: Volatility #Squeeze Watchlist and what it is telling me I have been tracking volatility squeezes, monitoring them through phases 1-3 and looking for candidates to buy. Recently strong trends have emerged in my watchlist. Of the current 51 stocks that I am either invested in or tracking here are the big sectors: #REITS (11 stocks or 21.6%): $ACC, $AIV, $AVB, $CLP, $CPT, $EQR, $HIW, $LXP, $MAC, $MPW, $UDR Food (7 stocks or 13.7%): $DPS, $GIS, $K, $MJN, $SAFM, $SJM, $UL Utilities (6 stocks or 11.8%): $AWK, $CNP, $EIX, $NRG, $OGE, $WR Not clear whether the market is being defensive or just the normal early cycle candidates. I was surprised by the number of #REITS. I suppose folks want to chase yield. In any case I throw these up for consideration. Cheers, @Ray
  • jververis: #Reits # going over my scans today and #reits were really strong through the day. Look at $IYR etf and several stocks # $VNO, $SLG, $SPG, $KIM, $HCP, $AVB, $ESS, $REG, $CPT and PLD. Not sure why #reits are so strong today, but the stocks are certainly working. Any ideas why???? John
  • muldoon: VS for Real Estate Cos. $AVB BRE $CPT ESS $FRT VNO My end-of-week scan for Vol Sqzs turned up a surprising number of real estate cos. (some #REITs, some not) -- and almost no other sectors/industries wiggled through my perhaps-overly-tight criteria. Any thoughts on what's unique about this sector #RHRN?

  • debrup: Breakouts indeed don't work when i buy them $WYNN EQR $AVB It has often happened that breakouts fail terribly as of late.
  • andrewjr: Listen don't get discouraged! Like @Dan said start of with a small position. Looking at the tickers that you just tried to buy on breakouts, they seem to be at very good buy points especially $AVB and $EQR, who are both at their 50 day moving averages. So in your case if you both a small position at first you could add more here at this level helping to average out your cost. P.S. I am in the same boat as you always seem to buy at the wrong time but I am starting to get the hang of it, GL
