  • Lou: @AndStars @Henry $ET $EPD $CODI #OT #K-1 #Taxes #RetirementAccounts - I agree with @Henry's post. Several years ago, I had $ET in an IRA and I realized the potential issues with UBTI taxes. While the tax returns my broker filed for the IRA carried f ...
  • AndStars: @Henry $ET $EPD $CODI #OT #K-1 #Taxes #RetirementAccounts Thanks @Henry, yes. I appreciate your experience and your knowledge. I'm new to this. (Who would think a retirement account could be taxed before distribution???) I am watching this very closely and will report back to our friends here at SMM/OMM as to my situation. I didn't invest heavily in any of these names, but I know others may have, and we all have an interest in this. I consider this a huge government overreach nipping at the heals of our retirement accounts. Coolidge had it right. Forgotten hero. Nobody is following his lead. Spend, spend, spend leads to tax, tax, tax. Consider what you are buying with your tax dollars. Consider who you vote for.
  • AndStars: @Lou $ET $EPD $CODI #OT #K-1 #Taxes #RetirementAccounts #IRA Thanks @Lou, always appreciate you posts! This is an area I never imagined, but clearly it's something some of us need to pay attention to. Even without a tax bite, the paperwork burden is worth taking note of. Sounds like you've learned to get the best from both worlds, taking advantage of good MLPs in taxable accounts, and avoiding the pain of holding them in tax deferred (retirement and HSA accounts). Best to you!
  • Henry: @AndStars #OT #K-1 #Taxes #RetirementAccounts $ET $EPD It doesn't take 100's of thousands of income to surpass the $1000 limit. In my case it was $CODI which converted last year into a C corp to do away with that problem. This was several years ago and the broker filed the appropriate tax form for the IRA and paid the 15% tax out of the IRA Oil LP's generated K1's and $ET Is notoriously late in sending out it's K1 I have never filled taxes or tax forms in states other than where I resided.
  • Henry: $CODI #Tax_question Compass, a K-1 BDU is converting to a C-corp. I know someone else in the forum owns this. They had a recent return of capital dividend to "reduce the tax consequences" of the upcoming conversion. does anyone know what the tax consequences are for the shareholder in this situation. New all time high at the open and a 5.6$ divy
  • Henry: @Jazman0013 $NEWT I've owned it as a yield hog for a number of years. Should have bought more when @grcjr posted about their pending dividend increase in tthe 3rd and 4th quarters on 5/11. Since then its up 25% $NLY is paying 9.5% RHRN $NEWT will yield 8.8% based on the projected divy of $3.15 and todays' price. Based on that, I'd say it is fully valued and if you bought it for a trade, take partials or set some staggered stops. Some yieldhogs like $AGNC have been long term dogs $AGNC is still down 50% from it's all time highs, so is $NLY for that matter. $NEWT, $MAIN $CODI are not in that category I have diamond hands on NEWT
  • Pokersmith: @Henry $NEWT $NLY $AGNC $MAIN $CODI Long MAIN, fwiw
  • Jazman0013: @Henry $NEWT $NLY $AGNC $MAIN $CODI more than a couple yield hogs got hit good. $PSEC is wonderful if you bought somewhere around $5 but has been a nightmare hold for long term holders. Just because they have high yield doesn’t make them invincible... in fact cuts to yield and other issues are very toxic. If they slowly rise or stay stagnant that dividend is a beautiful thing. I have been taking profits on many long term holds like $PSEC and took half off of $NEWT yesterday. Too easy to go from hero to hobo...
  • Henry: $CODI #K1 someone else in the forum owns this too. I have it in a personal account and an IRA and it's a K-1 company. For only the second time ever I am going to get hit with URBI tax in my IRA. Does anyone know how TD Ameritrade handles the forms?
  • Henry: @Wolf $CODI Failed breakout from a month ago sent it into a squeeze and now expansion.
  • Wolf: @Henry $CODI Thanks for the heads up, lost track of this one.. Will watch for a pullback.

  • sierramp: $CODI BO from cup and handle pattern on average volume.
  • sierramp: I'm back in $CODI nice cup, low beta, bountiful 7.54% div. A holding company. @Henry has had several posts about it.
  • Henry: @sierramp $CODI I don't look at it much and just saw the news that they sold Mannitoba Harvest for cash and $TLRY shares.
  • sierramp: @Henry $CODI $TLRY ....and TLRY milestone payment of C$49M though it could be reduced if milestones not achieved. Sounds like a good deal. CODI characterizes it as 'unlocking shareholder value'. As @bRobert would say, looks like a good employee.
  • sierramp: Having a decent day after going through my 'Recently Sold' list and getting back in a couple of them. $COLD and $CODI. @Dan gave mentioned $COLD this morning as being at a good / low risk BP. I've already done the work on my Recently Solds so it's a quick job to run through the list. Last week @Champ reminded me to do this. Have to admit it had been a couple of weeks.
  • Henry: $CODI this is what institutional buying looks like. I am not sure why. It is a holding company for small and medium size companies, a baby carrier, safe co, Sterno. I have held it for income for years, 9% yield.
  • sierramp: @Henry $CODI I prefer pullbacks but the long base Feb - May and low Beta along with interesting fundamentals, institutional buying as you said in June and still only 31.7% institutional-owned had me pulling the trigger. In at 19.45 with low-risk stop at today's LOD.
  • Wolf: @Henry $CODI Bought @ 16.20 for the dividend. Hard not to take profits up this much so fast.
  • Henry: $CODI a BDC up on a Barrons article long for years 9% yield
  • Wolf: $CODI Goes Ex Div tomorrow. Up .66%. Long medium position.
  • jan2138: @issues $CODI Which $CODI pfd. are you referring to in your post on Friday?
  • :
  • jan2138: @issues $CODI Thanks. Interesting article and a fairly attractive pfd. issue. The K-1 aspect rules it out for me, though. Thanks for posting about it. Always happy to learn about new tickers with attractive yields.
  • issues: Compass Diversified: Undervalued Preferred Stock Now Yields 9.7% $CODI is a publicly traded "private equity" firm that acquires and operates middle market businesses. The Company owns 10 portfolio companies that generate $279 million of pro forma EBITDA. Recently issued preferred stock has tumbled in recent weeks, bringing yields to mid-9% levels, which does not make sense based on fundamentals. The credit profile of the preferred stock is strong, with 2x asset coverage and 4.5x cash flow coverage of preferred dividends. Also $ATHN reported a good quarter beating by 71% (est .73 actual 1.25 beat 71.23 but it's down 11% to $127.22. Will wait for green day to buy! NP
  • jan2138: @Henry $CODI #yieldhog In reply to your post from yesterday, I used to consider an issue had to be yielding 10% or higher before I would consider it as a yieldhog candidate. Now, I like to see at least a 9% yield at the point of entry and look forward to that yield declining because of share price appreciation.
  • Henry: $CODI #yieldhog @Jan2138 What is the current yield that defines your yieldhogs? CODI is 8% just had a secondary. BDC type business
  • jpbel2003: $CODI 7.8% div. ex 7/21.. nice uptrend since 6/23... 20.54 resistence... been collecting div. for three yrs with thisone
  • Casper: $CODI @jan2138 Dana do you own this? I was wondering what your thoughts where about there last report?
  • jan2138: @Casper $CODI; I do not own it. It is a K-1 generator and the yield of 8.57% is not nearly enough for me to get involved in this type of structure. The dividend history looks excellent to date. I would take a look at the latest report as cash available for distribution looked a bit light of the declared dividend, and determine whether you feel they can maintain the current level. As I said, because of the yield, I would not be interested in it especially, with the K-1 format. It looks like a hedge fund to me.

  • rczar: Everything.I have nothing. 100% cash and loving life. I have put on a pair of boxing gloves and handcuffs with the key for them weith my wife. I try and not open a trade in the white zone, prefer red or green. Will take the day and study stocks for my watchlist. I believe better buys are ahead and want to invest 50% of the portfolio with Yield Hogs. Between dividends and capital gains, these can produce some of the geatest returns of my generation and be able to sleep at night. My choices are :AGNC $AOD $ARCC $BOE $CEL $CODI $CXS $EAD $GTY $IVR $PDLI $PSEC . Ant thoughts and insight would be appreciated. Later Gang
  • rczar: Hog Yields.......Loading up some long term positions..bought $AGNC,ARCC,$CODI,IDV,$IVR,PBT, go night night Big Swine
  • jackies: $ARCC, $CODI, $IDV, $IVR just broke lower and have a reverse hammer, in other words, a long tail upside and is at the bottom of the trading range for the day. That is usually an indication they will go lower. $AGNC is below the 50 day moving average. $PBT has a shape of which I can't remember the name at the moment, but it opened below yesterday's close, traded up a bit and is now lower than the lowest price yesterday. Is there some reason you are buying #RHRN? Kind Regards Jackie
  • Henry: $CODI Possible over reaction this am. This bdc's CEO took a leave of absence to address regulatory inquiries not related to the company. 8.2% yield. long @Henry
  • Golf77: @cmac $CODI issued additional shares last night. Don't be surprised if $TCAP does the same. I think that is why the stock is coming in. Good Luck
  • Golf77: $CODI announced a secondary. In the Yield Hog family.
  • Henry: $CODI Better late than never. #Cramer relented and said he was wrong on this stock. A hard stock to buy now.
  • Henry: MLP's dlylis We own different MLP's. I have no idea if my assumption on $CQP is correct, I based it on my investment in $PSE, which owns oil and gas producing properties and $CODI which is a business development corporation. Neither had $ROC, but that means nothing with regard to CQP. I will call investors relations tomorrow and report back. I had no idea the companies you mentioned call their distribution ROC. My thinking is there is good $ROC and bad ROC. Borrowing money to pay a #dividend is bad ROC. Someone mentioned a company yesterday that is borrowning money to give an $8 #dividend. I would call that bad ROC. @Henry
  • PhilG: @Jan2138- #Yieldhogs - $CODI - @Dana - Have you looked at this stock? Do you own it? What do you think about it?
  • PhilG: @jan2138 - $CODI - Thank you. I very much appreciate the research you do. I am long $BKCC,CNMSL and PNNT.
  • jan2138: @PhilG: $CODI is one of about 10 names I am watching and researching. I do not own, as yet. Looks like market did not like the reported .04c loss reported on 8/9/10. But distributable cash flow appears to be adequate to meet the dist., and they have been successful in tapping the market for capital to grow their business. Dists. have been steady. 9.69 yld. is attractive. It appears to be having a struggle right at support, the 50 sma. If it demonstrates that support can hold and bounce or begin consolidating, an entry might be forthcoming. I think #rhrn, it's a first out of the foxhole move unless you already are long and feel the gap down is over done and o.k. to add small piece.
  • PhilG: jan21238 - $CODI - Starting to move up with the market. Might be woirth watching.
  • Henry: $CODI I have owned this stock for quite a while and I agree with @Dana. Since it's gap down in April, I see it in a box from 15.24 on the high side to 13 on the low. Technically it could be making a higher low but I don't trust the market, so I am content to wait before adding to my holdings. @Henry
  • garoadwarrior: ARBA - @Miki I got some too at $16.30 thinking I gonna hold on long term. $CODI check it out I have a really good feeling about this one. LONG
  • garoadwarrior: $CODI - This is one I found a few days ago. Was ex-#dividend on Friday 7/23 so one would expect a pullback, but has only gone down a little so far. Seems to be consolidating and trying to break out. Pays 9% #dividend, lots of insider buying. Anyone else own this? Do some fundamental analysis, I think it's one worth watching. Opinions anyone? I'm Long. ARBI - Small internet company. Really nice looking chart. Watching this one. No position.
  • garoadwarrior: $CODI - Small holding company I found 9.15% Div EX-DIV was on 7/23 Earnings Aug 9th Lots of insider buying I'm Long
  • Henry: $PWE also $CODI @dthurn fortunately I didn't have a stop $CODI is a $MLP sort of a business development company, but look at this: 9:30 open 13.68 fell to as low as 12:51 in the first minute 9:41 hit a low of 11 a 20% drop in 11 minutes on no news, easily beating the 15% drop of $PWE 9:51 bounced to 12.53 4:00 13.69 #Cramer said to buy the mid-morning panic. He didn't say midmorning would be long gone by 9:50 @Henry
  • Gracie: $PWE, $CODI and stops....HI @Henry. Maybe this is to be expected in really volatile markets. Thing is, I've lost money doing plenty of dumb things like choosing lousy stocks, choosing lousy entry points, and holding losers too long as well as not tak ...
  • techrepjapan: $CODI - I'm long on this. But... Can someone explain a stock's price action... where it dumps during normal trading hours, then climbs back up during after hours... almost the entire loss for the day? During normal trading today, it dumped .80 cents (5.47%). After hours, it initially was back up that .80 cents.
  • Henry: $CODI I'm long too. I recorded the conference call but didn't listen to it yet. From what I read year to year was bad but 4th quarter was a come back. I'm surprised anyone would trade this one after hours. I was going to say it was probably a mistake because Schwab doesn't show any trades but lists the last price as yesterdays close and today's range was huge for this stock. However the the NASDAQ site lists two trades 14.326 for 5890 shares and 14.63 for 500 shares in the after hours. It's had quite a run into earnings and I think the news isn't bad but I doubt it will open at 14.63. We can put this down to the Wild West of $AH trading. @Henry
