And that would be a safe route to go. But many of these stocks have such great long term charts that if you can get one or a few at a good spot, or take a plunge higher than you like but with the idea of adding on a pullback, then you could greatly outperform IHI. If these were biotechs, with huge risk in any individual stock (and all small/mid sized biotechs have a lot of risk), I'd be more inclined to buy the index. JMHO.

- genki: @DAN Some of the stocks I am long are quite volatile. E.g. $AAOI, $TCMD. They can go up a lot on a good day and can also wreck my portfolio in a selloff. I could imagine if there was a 5% correction, I would sustain a big hit. If I owned the safer stocks (e.g. MSFT?), the gain wouldn't be that good. So I am thinking if I can short some stocks at the same time I long, that will enhance my profit and provide some cushion to the downside. I have been taking some short positions occasionally. Mostly got out with just a little profit (after paying dividend:-))as I was not as confident when shorting. I took a short in MASI yesterday as it rose to resistance. I think learning some shorting skill will allow us to continue making money when the bull ends, someday.

Just 9% of the float is short...but with volume typically so low, I think this is a short squeeze. Revenues increased 45% year over year. Still losing money...but not much, and the market likes it.
