  • normr: $MUSA - Cranking higher on no news I can find. Approaching the 200 DMA. I started a small position this morning when it crossed above early October highs. I plan to get more if it pulls back at the 200 day. If it blasts through, I'll grab some more on a test of the 200 from the top.
  • Lou: @Seth $AA $PCP - I really don't know, but probably. Generally, in my experience, after a split the stepchild gets thrown away as investors focus on the favorite. Recall that when $MUR and $COP spun off $MUSA and $PSX the latter two were kicked out by the institutions that held the pre-split positions. That was a great time to buy them (I bought both) and they have since outperformed the institutional favorites.
  • Lou: @msb _ not looking back on $PGN. I was wrong and am sorry others followed me into that stinker of a trade. I thought I might replicate my big winners when $MUSA was spun off from $MUR and $PSX was spun off from $COP. No such luck with this spinoff from $NE.
  • Lou: ...
As a long term investor, I love to buy starter positions and the more I learn and believe in the company the more I press them. I might initially press with short puts expecting to get the shares cheaper and then, as the stock goes up, buy more and ...
  • Diana2010: $MDSO, $MUSA Bought starter positions in both of these today on the small pullbacks. Hoping for larger pullback to add.
  • Auto: $MUSA flag.. break of $65ish next stop $78ish LTP ... :>)
  • Auto: $MUSA bull engulf candle today, more upside to come, look for $65 for the break out ... :>)
  • Lou: Note to self - "don't trade out of boredom." I've exited some great LT positions because i just wanted to do something and they were plain boring. Case in point, I sold a part of my $MUSA - fortunately just a part. Now I'm bored with $MS. Sitting on my hands and not letting it go!
  • Lou: I've been comparing the initial dumping of $PGN, after its spin, to that of $MUSA. Obviously different companies in different businesses but look at the $MUSA chart from the date of its spin through today. I had expected something similar from $PGN but I have now tempered my expectations. Nonetheless, I do expect a nice bump when the dumping abates. In the meantime, I'm very happy to have built my $MUSA position while others were dumping.
  • Lou: ...
$PGN never traded at 17.5 - fluke print on opening day after spin off from $NE - .333 shares for every $NE share owned. I have posted many times my take. Institutional owners got this small stake of a smaller cap company, decided that it doesn't sui ...
  • Lou: @rj7150 - hope you are right but I wouldn't guess. Each pop seems to be met by selling. At some point it will end and @DANs IPO strategy will apply - I'm long $PGN but not adding until I'm sure. Still love the short puts. Perfect example of that strategy is $MUSA - met heavy selling when spun off - look at it now!
  • Lou: @bradleyrich - All of the elephants are still trying to abandon the ship through the same porthole. Institutions that got their shares from the $NE spinoff (1 for each 3) are dumping because it is a smaller cap and they don't need it. This has happened in many other spin off situations. As I posted previously, look at initial trading in $MUSA. I stepped into that after the carnage and am now happily way ahead. Taking a little longer with $PGN but worth watching and pouncing when it's done going down.
  • bullmoose: $MUSA - breaking out of a flag
  • Lou: Posted on OMM in reply to a question about $PGN dividends: Prospectus on the split off from $NE states that $PGN will devote about 80 to 90 mil to dividends from the git go. Based on shares outstanding, that's a bit more than 10 percent per annum. It is cash flow positive as it acquired working drill rigs in mid contract paying daily rates. The dumping is because $NE is owned by a number of institutions that have no interest in keeping the smaller number of cheap $PGN shares they got in the split. I played the same thesis when $MUSA was spun out of $MUR. Same kind of trading, first the $MUSA dump then the new buyers brought it up.
  • Lou: Good morning - won't be around much today so I'm calling attention to stalwart quarters/news for $NRF, $MUSA, $ETP. Will be listening to conference calls. Also, need to review $MUR and $ACAS. Will also finish buying my next yieldhog $PGN. Gym and then possibly more much later. Hasta Luego.
  • Lou: @jan2138 - my effort to catch the bottom was a dismal failure. The institutions are still dumping $PGN. To answer your questions - the company is organized as a UK plc - public limited company, we'd call it a corporation, thus no K-1s. As for foreign taxes on dividends, I don't believe it will apply. Similar situations as most other drillers - incorporated in UK, Ireland, Switzerland, etc. No expert on this but I haven't seen it in the few I've owned - $RIG $SLB $NE. All that said, I'm still bullish on this company and just wish I hadn't jumped the gun, though I believe I'll have a nice profitable dividend paying investment once the selling settles down. Very similar action to $MUSA when it was spun off.
  • Lou: @NapoleonSolo - no, I wasn't at all offended. Just wanted to fess up a blunder in timing with $PGN. BTW, I did the same thing with $MUSA and $PSX - got in too early, watched them go down before they reversed and still have a now very substantial position in $MUSA. With respect to $PSX, I did OK but did sell too soon - but then selling too soon is better than too late when you have gains.
  • Lou: Nice Q for $MUSA - stock up AH. Repurchase program and div increase for $MUR. Still holding both for LT. Recall my thesis on $MUSA - same kind of thinking with regard to $PGN, which may be bottoming RHRN. I've added and am now almost full.
  • Lou: Keep an eye on $PGN the low tech driller spun off today by $NE. It is down more than 5.6%. Shareholders of $NE got one share of $PGN for each three shares of $NE they owned. No one seems to have a large position and it is being actively kicked out ...
  • Lou: Anyone follow me into $MUSA? Smoking and new all time high today!
  • NapoleonSolo: @Lou $MUSA that's some chart Captain Lou...nice find! you can probably squeeze .70 or so by selling Jul 55 calls against with stock extended here and at top of range or wait till stock stops making all time highs and rests and do same/similar....option liquidity /spreads is fair at best though
  • Lou: @NapoleonSolo Not interested in writing calls against $MUSA as it is a very LT hold I think it still has a way to go. I've been pounding the table on this for a very long time. Together with $WFT $TWI and other down and out companies, it was a pick I made on SMM in our own version of the CNBC playbook challenge.
  • NapoleonSolo: @Lou $MUSA...FWIW I've been writing CCs against $LNG for a few years and got in at 16.....got called away once at 44 and jumped right back at lower cost basis....OOM CCs can really turbo charge your returns on long LT stock positions if can time sales right with slight risk of call away....just food for thought
  • Lou: @NapoleonSolo I only write covered calls where I have a relatively low gain or where the option activity is liquid enough to support a ready ability to roll at expiry. When I was in $GLD and the ETF was climbing, I rolled short calls up and out every month until finally they expired worthless and I repeated the process. With each roll I was able to put a buck or two in my pocket. $MUSA does not qualify under either of my criteria and I don't want to get it called away as I am carrying a very substantial taxable gain. But thanks for your opinion.
  • NapoleonSolo: @Lou very fair points.....no use paying the tax guy if you can help it and you're right... rechecked $MUSA option liquidity and it's far less than stellar... FWIW the re-roll strategy at /near expiry can really pay off with liquid weeklies with high IVs $BBRY is an example IVs on weeklies are north of 50 and extremely liquid/penny spread......high maintenance though to execute
  • Lou: I haven't posted much in the last month as I've been preoccupied with a major family celebration and business matters. However, I've tried to read posts and stay abreast of the market and positions. I've continued to be almost fully invested on the long side in names I've previously mentioned such a $NRF $ACAS $FB $GILD $WFT $CHRW and $MUSA. I posted that added in size to $PSEC when it dropped during the SEC fiasco. Other than that I've been adding to existing short put positions in $FB $AAPL $HAL $ESV and $LVS. I've added shares and short puts to $ESV and $CAG. Looking to further big gains out of $NRF in the next few weeks. Good luck to all.
  • Lou: $MUSA - continues to surge like an Energizer Bunny. Finally doing what I expected when I put it in the SMM version of the CNBC playbook earlier this year. My other playbook pick that's doing well is $WFT. But $TWI is still a dog - hope springs eternal!
  • Lou: $MUSA - I've been pounding the table on this one for way too long and adding while it kept declining. Looks like it is finally doing what I had expected.
  • 1Boston330: $MUSA@ Lou. Nice trading! Sorry I'm not in it.
  • Lou: @issues I have no idea as to which post you are responding as you do not mention a stock. If $NRF, now is as good a time as any; if $MUSA, I'd wait until it settles in a bit - the current uptrend has been steep so I don't know about buying RHRN. Also, $MUSA is a smaller cap company so one could get hurt buying a big move up. As for earnings, $NRF missed but that is not very relevant in my view and $MUSA missed as well but it was a kitchen sink quater.
  • issues: @Lou Sorry Lou. I was referring to $MUSA. I bought $ERF (oil) on the drop today.
  • chuckd: @Lou - $MUSA - wow. isn't this screaming sell right now for you? after such a big move up? I would hardly hesitate, but then I would have been out at 45, much to my chagrin. How to play these big moves is a mystery to me. Good luck with it.. Nice find.
  • Lou: @chuckd - $MUSA - not my style to sell a stock that has broken out while it is trending higher. I'd consider a loose stop were I worried about the stock longer term, but this may hesitate, pull back some and, I believe, continue the uptrend. Study Dan's teachings and you'll get a better flavor of what I mean.
  • Lou: $WFT $MUR $CHRW $AIG $ETP $EXPD $MUSA - hope all who celebrate had a great Easter or are enjoying the Passover holidays.

I am holding a good bit of cash and am thinking of adding to some existing positions that are underrepresented in my portfoli ...
  • Lou: $MUSA - @Dan doesn't like to average down but I'm a true believer in this company so I added today. I expect to make some good money in this so I'm willing to own at current price.
  • BuffaloBill: $MUSA - @Lou you are by far the best cheeleader for this company its certainly riding a long resistance / support line. Looked great on breakout IPO Nov 7 & 8. Worrysome on breakdown of the 8MA. Insitutions according to BOP worden have not given up, even showed buying into high 46.00 range. Noon was the low point, today. Best trading alongside you.
  • Lou: $MUSA @BuffaloBill - my thesis is that those who were long $MUR at the split got .25 shares of $MUSA for each $MUR share they owned. Lots of institutions owned $MUR then and still own it. Too small to bother with and relatively small cap to boot. When it didn't pop they started liquidating as they don't want to own a smaller cap name. Sort of like throwing the baby out with the bathwater. My reason for owning is the fundamentals. I now own a full position - shares I got from $MUR plus several adds. I like the real estate, earnings and future dividends plays so I'm sticking with it, My final buy was today at $41.50.
  • Lou: #Portfolio Game #2014 - my picks in no particular order: $NE - be careful in tracking this as it will have a spin-off in 2014 $MUSA $TWI $WFT $CRM $CHRW Since this is a year long contest that will begin on 1/1 I'm swinging for the fences and going with beaten down names that in my opinion could pop significantly in 2014. I much prefer $NRF, $FB, $GILD, $ACAS, $C, $BAC and a few other favorites but absolute gains in 2014 will likely come from today's cellar dwellers.
  • Lou: $MUSA - topped off my holdings in this, so I'm now holding a full position. I normally wouldn't do that with a smaller cap stock but I really love this company!
  • Lou: $MUSA - adding #RHRN!
  • Lou: $MUSA @jnag698 - just a smaller cap value play. The company, spun off from $MUR, owns and operates convenience stores/gas stations adjacent to $WMT stores. Expanding with $WMT, very sound balance sheet, valuable real estate and, in my opinion, will establish a generous #dividend as they grow the asset base. I just saw an opportunity to add again at today's close. Also, on a technical basis, there are almost no losing holders so @DAN's IPO strategy is at work.
  • woodman: $MUSA @Lou - looks great. Nice work there.
  • GOOSE: $MUR, $MUSA @Lou, Yes @Lou, I have $MUR & $MUSA DEC 20 67.50 & 45.0 SHORT PUTS. No stock. Thank you.
  • Lou: $MUSA - an investment, not a trade. Just calling your attention to a little value gem recently spun off from MUR. This company owns real estate, gas stations and convenience stores adjacent to $WMT locations and continues to grow with WMT. I'm long from the spinoff, have added, and plan to add more. @Lou
  • Lou: $MUSA - keep an eye on this little gem. Spin off from MUR. All of the convenience stores and retail gas stations and real estate adjacent to $WMT stores. Nice money maker, growing with $WMT locations, and about to cross over all time (recent) high of 41.97. When it closes above that it will qualify for @DAN's IPO strategy. This, $IMO, is a great fundamental story as well on a smaller cap company. I'm long from spin off and have added shares to round up to a decent position.
  • Lou: $MUR @bigbartabs - chart may look strange but stock has been extremely strong. @Charting programs have not taken into account the $MUSA spinoff that was worth about $9/share. Add that $9 and you'll see what I mean.
  • Lou: $FB MUR - popped in SMM to to share two long ideas. $FB up a tiny bit on this down day. Stifel raised target to 50 and I think it moves up from present price PDQ. I'd be a buyer if I weren't loaded with long shares, short puts and even some long calls (from my posted buy of 40 calls financed by sale of 42 puts at the beginning of the month). $MUR separating $MUSA today, getting a special #dividend of $650 mil, and $MUR shareholders getting .25 shares of $MUSA for each $MUR share. $MUR is up when all else is down or treading water. Long $MUR and short now OTM puts. That's about all I know today. Enjoy the weekend all.
  • Lou: $MUR MUSA - so I have this idea... $MUSA is being spun off from $MUR and will begin trading as an independent company on 9/3. Each share of $MUR will get the holder .25 shares of MUSA. $MUSA will take over the retail gasoline stations and convenienc ...
  • snmtraders: $MUSA @LOU- I like this idea alot, and agree with your presumption that it will sell off initially, giving investors a better entry point. I have done no homework on the actual spin-off, but have seen this with $PSX and ABBV. I am guessing we would treat the trading of the spin-off the way @Dan taught us to trade IPO's, so wait for the price to fall, recover, move higher than the spin off price, retest that price and buy if it moves beyond that high. If we are wrong about this stock selling off initially, we wait for it to top, test the spin-off price, and buy if it moves above the prior high. I love spin-offs, as they tend to outperform the spinning stock within a 1-3 month time frame, if memory serves me right. Take a look at Guggenheim's $ETF of spin-offs -- CSD.
