  • woodman: $XLP is where all the (a-hem) "excitement" is today. That's to say, it's green in a sea of red (other than bond funds). The following stocks within XLP are up 2% or more (or at least were when I looked a little while ago: $CPB $SJM $CLX $CHD $GIS $K $KMB $PM $KHC $WMT $CAG. ($TSN honorable mention.)
  • lanedra: @woodman $XLP $CPB $SJM $CLX $CHD $GIS $K $KMB $PM $KHC $WMT $CAG $TSN With regard to XLP, would you dare "nibble" in this overall market bloodbath?
  • woodman: @lanedra $XLP $CPB $SJM $CLX $CHD $GIS $K $KMB $PM $KHC $WMT $CAG $TSN - I'm not hungry. I'm essentially fully in cash and standing out of the way, except for short duration 3x ETF trades. That said, if you have strong hunger pangs, be sure to use stops/position size to protect. But I trust nothing here. These are major support levels that are failing. There will be sudden rebounds, but cash suits me right now.

  • jwstich: $MO $PM $BTI Surprised that there are no posts on the above three stocks. They are down from about 3 to 6% based on a patent infringement suit on the IQOS tech which heats tobacco rather than burns it. Some suiits were filed in Europe against $PM with no adverse results to $PM. IQOS is very limited in $MO. I think the drop in price is overdone in $MO. It currently yields over 8%. I might wait to see what the stock does today. What do you all think??
  • Henry: $PM there was a chyron on CNBC that said the PM CEO was urging the UK to ban cigarettes. That had to be fake news as I thought PM sold cigys to rest of the world and MO to the US. Not so, PM has gone smokeless, while fully admitting their products still have addictive nicotine.

  • jwstich: $MO, $PM both stocks up about 3% today after FDA decision to allow marketing og IQOS system. From Market Watch. Philip Morris PM, 3.41% and the Food and Drug Administration announced this week that the IQOS “electrically heated tobacco system” has been given the green light to market as a safer alternative to cigarettes. Now designated as a “modified risk” product, the company can promote these items “as containing a reduced level of or presenting a reduced exposure to a substance,” according to the FDA statement. Philip Morris, the company behind Marlboro cigarettes, describes these alternative products as heating rather than burning tobacco, which a cigarette does. Burning tobacco, which reaches 600 degrees Celsius, “contains high levels of harmful chemicals,” according to the company’s website. The tobacco heating system (THS) heats tobacco to 350 degrees Celsius.

  • DAN: For you yield hogs, you might consider $MO (yield 9.17%) and $PM (yield 6.77%). I think there is zero chance that they'll cut their dividends. Think about it -- if you smoke, you're a chimney now. This is a stressful environment. Very uncertain times. I can envision someone doing yoga at home with an ashtray next to the mat, sneaking a puff during downward dog. Many people are eating more junk food these days -- stress eating. Tobacco is the junk food for smokers. I know that if I still smoked, I'd be out in the back yard right now. I just don't think these companies are going to see any kind of financial hit.

  • Bridget: $PM is looking strong today. Bouncing off the 21dMA. Low risk buy with a stop below the 50dMA
  • scottrades: My notes for today: $SSO Focus on levels not the news. $QQQ Ditto $GDX Pulled back on big volume. $ETFC Trade from @Bridget, look for a run into Earnings. $TWTR Looking for a gap fill to the upside. $UBER Mostly out of this. $MA Holding up in trend. $FLIR Long base and above the 50 Day. Watch above 54 $HPQ Digesting the pop and drop but like the tight price action. $LOW Trying to Squeeze out of a base. Support at the Middle BBand. $CTXS Staying in trend. $MX Bounce off the 50 Day. $PM Squeezing above a base. $REGN Squeezing. Look for this to make a new Weekly high.
  • DrScience: $MO $PM JICYMI, The US Food and Drug Administration has officially changed the federal minimum age to purchase tobacco products,, including e-cigarettes and vaping cartridges, to 21 years from 18 years. Filed under: If you cant beat 'em... $MO is in a 3.66% VS after ex-div date on the day before Christmas; $PM is consolidating in a new box above the breakout after their ex-div date a week earlier. I don't know how the law will affect the stocks going forward, but neither seems to be reacting to the news -- perhaps already baked in.
  • scottrades: My #Swing Notes: $SSO Day 4 $QLD Day 4 $WMT Failed Breakout $DAL Nice Triangle breakout. Watch for a test of this move. $ANET Watch above 199.30 $ABBV Watch above 90.50 $MLNX Squeezing on Good volume $PM Squeezing on Ok volume. $HLF Nice long base and 50 Day is catching up $TW A High Squeeze $LSCC Mentioned by @Dan This is a pretty chart! $GDX Pulled back on low volume, still above the 50 Days. $AUY Sold at EOD. It’s ok to be wrong, not ok to stay wrong.
  • champ: @scottrades $SSO $QLD $WMT $DAL $ANET $ABBV $MLNX $PM $HLF $TW $LSCC $GDX $AUY #Swing ---- Check out that large drop in $BA today, that really had a negative effect on the $SPY/$SSO, is why the $SPY and the $DJI, could not hold onto the highs today, ...
  • Bridget: $PM is starting to come out of this recent squeeze.
  • Ajax4Hire: @DAN $APHA $ACB $CRON $CGC $TLRY $IIPR I don't like to trade in stocks below $10(1) and $CGC, $TLRY are in the "penalty box". $IIPR is below 200day-MA, 50day-MA, but $IIPR seems to have a good business model that is NOT closely tied to consumption. One day, cannabis/marijuana will lose its "hero" status and become a pariah like tobacco/cigarettes. The real money will be made when the tobacco companies buy these upstarts. $BTI, $PM, $MO, Reynolds (not public, was $RAI), $TYO, $LON are valued at $750B(total) $APHA $ACB $CRON $CGC $TLRY $IIPR are valued at $13B(total, that is generous). $PM pays more taxes($2.65B) than most of these companies value. Big Tobacco companies can easily consume any or all of the "Pot" stocks. (1) - sub-$10 stocks good for day trading but that can be exhausting and fraught with peril.
  • DAN: @Ajax4Hire $APHA $ACB $CRON $CGC $TLRY $IIPR $BTI $PM $MO $RAI $TYO $LON Yeah, I agree. Here's the thing about cannabis, tobacco, etc. I understand that cannabis has medicinal use on some level. I don't know anything about it -- I've tried CBD oil ...

  • Henry: $MO $PM Lots of news, the JUUL Ceo is stepping down, the merger is off, but Wells thinks it might happen at a later date, Both stocks are up in pre market, PM may get more of a boost.
  • Henry: $PM wants to merge with $MO ???
  • champ: @traderbren $MO $PM --- On this merger the news is out now that there will be #No-premium, no edge at all for either company. Ownership of the new company will be that $PM, will own 59% and $MO, will own 41%.
