- issues: I was surprised at how many of the IBD 50 stocks were replaced! 23 out of 50 are new! That's half. I can't see any difference between the charts of those replaced with the ones they kicked off. There's no sense that I can see in the difference between the old and new. The only observation is the "new homes" were abandoned including TREX. And some of the tech were gone. For example these are new on IBD 50: $AAWW $BRO $BX $CLF $EPRT $EW $JBHT $JEF $LIN $MPW $MRVL $NFG $NMRK $PFE $PSA $QLYS $REXR $SF $SIVG $SPG $STE $VRTS $WGO. - debeers: $JEF-tendered an offer for 750mm of its senior notes due 2023. In non-pro talk this means that they are doing so well that they were able to reduce their debt so i traded my $SF for this one as it should outperform it. - Docoof: @bRobert $SF Can you share your thoughts on this breakout following 6-7 months of consolidation? Thanks.

- Docoof: @bRobert $SF $SIVB I say this too much, but you’re fantastic. Thanks for the detailed response.
- bRobert: @Docoof $SF $SIVB My wife says that you can never say it enough. ;). She is. most often right Our little secret
- debeers: $SF-This is the one i think with the least susceptibility to market craziness and the returns are quite good--not as high as $SIVB but with a lot less risk: 1 year 97.9% 3 year 112.2% 3 years 178.4% The reason is that $SIVB moves more as tech moves more and i think tech has a tougher time of it. The relative strength is excellent as is the composite. 98 rating.LONG
- Margi1983: @debeers $SF $SIVB Great analysis. You and @bRobert are very special and "wicked smaaatt" Go Red Sox.
- debeers: $AN/$ARCB/$BOOT/$DDS/$FTNT/$INMD/$MTDR/$SF-LONGS ALL- pretty much spotless also in earnings for the last 8 quarters also so no stressing about being in or out for earnings. Exposures: Auto, tranny, discretionary denim, discretionary high end, least risky outstanding return tech , vanity medical, Oil exploration and pipe w/ a free ride for variances, Under the radar excellent financial. After picking out a crap company and buying wrong, the absolute dumbest thing you could possibly do is have all of your eggs in one basket IMO. EACH OF THESE HAS A RECORD OF SUPERIOR RETURNS so usually they will go down less in a bad market and go up more in a good market. Short Form: excellent stocks, excellent returns. You should be a happy camper with all of them.
- bRobert: @Margi1983 $SF $SIVB $SIVB and $SF. have. very similar WEEKLY charts. $SIVB. . has a tighter pinch and is a step ahead with a tested breakout . Similar 50%. upside target potential. Room for 2 winners. As usual, Lady Debeers did the hard dirty work with her very informative fundamental analysis.

He could afford to buy the whole damn $AAPL store with no problem.Perhaps, I wrote him, it is because attractively dressed women who can go out after exercise are more appealing than obsolete products. - debeers: MHK-@ginny-I can tell you that in Northern Cali in the vicinity of Silicon Valley and $SF, the housing is up 10% so the wealth effect is in play. Where I live, 1 hour south of the wineries, 1 hour north of Silicon valley, many of the buyers are all cash buyers. With the low interest rates, they can rent and pocket money and improve the property. Here's the anomaly: property taxes are still by all measures, very very cheap in California. The 2 fixes that are least expensive are paint and carpet, hardwood, tile. $MHK has a long way to run. I tink you'll be happy with it. Doesn't the fact that it refuses to have a meningfull pulback tell you something?
- Lavrock: Gold - after looking at prices of the internet sellers, I decided to buy from a local dealer in the $SF Bay area. The prices for gold and @silver coins are about the same as on the internet. The handling charge is a few dollars more per coin for American eagles but I avoid insurance and shipping charges. - fhsavidge: ANR@dagdog-thanks for the laugh. I might present her a lump of coal with $ANR written on it, as it, miraculously, paid for the gas from here to $SF to buy the ring; now had I kept $SPWR, that would have paid for the ring. Oh well, one can't have everything.
- fhsavidge: Offtopic@MultiMill--If I can get this solar panel extracted from my skull, that may happen tonight. I know Valentine's Day is a clich# -day to propose, but I've never actually celebrated Valentine's Day, always considering it too commercial, tawdry. Hence, it might just be the perfect moment. Reservations at "Taste" in, off all places, Plymouth, CA. No, not Paris, $SF, New York, Yosemite or other more romantic spots I've considered, but at this age and stage, less might be more. And I shun public displays, so this might be also a less nervous venue to go down on one knee. Do swains still do that, I wonder? Cheers, and man, are my palms sweaty all of a sudden....
- fhsavidge: @Tricia--ditto happy birthday, and best wishes for the future. Have followed your posts avidly. And you're right about reaching 60 and looking forward. Last summer I didn't think I'd reach it (I'm 59) due unexpected health problems. Overcame them thanks to the help of my VSO. Now I'm sneaking off to $SF to buy an engagement ring for her. Yes, here I am nearing 60 and the possibility of my first marriage looms, as I've been a live-long bachelor. All she has to do is overcome her dissatisfaction over my selling $SPWR too soon (she's let me back in the house, so that's a start) for this miracle to occur. Now looking for the appropriate moment. I have little but what I have is precious--and that's life and love. Enough. Enjoy your new endeavors. Cheers.

- Lou: $NRF - different breed of mREIT than the ones mentioned. The others deal in agency paper - buy long, borrow short and make their money on the spread. If long term rates go up, their spreads narrow and the earnings & dividends go down. $NRF, on the other hand, is a more traditional mREIT - it originated mortgage loans on major projects, keeps many of these loans, does not buy loans originated by others, makes money by buying its own and others mortgage securities (not agency $SF home type) and is making money hand over fist. $NRF just increased its #dividend to 17 cents/q and will likely keep increasing it for the next few quarters as it has for the last few quarters. @Lou

While watching the NO at $SF game and waiting for the local headliner to get under way, I went through a few charts and ran some correlations. I like glancing at correlations not so much as indicators per se, but to get a sense of what might be driv ... - Lavrock: $FAZ - 3X leveraged etfs: One of my trading buddies presented a study at the December meeting of the $SF Bay #options group where he demonstated a strategy using #options to short pairs of 3x etfs such as the TNA/TZA and the FAS/FAZ. His objective was "to demonstrate the potential for extraordinary trading returns based upon exploiting the structural defects implicit with leveraged ETFs." To back test his strategy he used the $IWM from 10/18/2010 through 10/14/2011 because it closed at 70.88 and 71.14 on those respective dates. In other words it was flat over the twelve month period. But the TNA/TZA pair that trade off the $IWM were anything but flat. During that period $TNA declined from 54.27 to 43.23 (20%) and $TZA declined from 66.69 to 36.48 (45%). Pretty compelling simple numbers confirming these are day trading vehicles only.
- Diana2010: jojo1480 - Thank you for providing leadership and for being a role model for many of us. Your conviction and investing ideas have been inspiring. Since I also live in the $SF area, I had hoped to meet you at a SMM gathering sometime to thank you in person. Best wishes (and take a look at PRIM. Even after the recent move it is cheap.) Diana
- mpathee77: WealthTrack This airs Sunday am here in the $SF bay area. Listen to what Francois has to say about the yield curve and the inflation rate and what to expect. He predicted much slower $GDP growth over a year ago. http://www.wealthtrack.com/
- Aragorn: A quick morning set for us early risers or late to bed types. A nice vibe being sent out to all of us because we deserve it. On the SMM gathering on the 17th, we have over 50 people expressing interest and that does not even include spouses that may come. People are coming in From $SF to San @Antonio. All I can say is WOW. If you build it, they will come. - debeers: Crude Oil:Jojo-isn't being right all the time boring? I decided to check out a couple of the chemical companies I am looking to learn more about at the library in light of your comments and you are absolutely right. I will be looking for these cos. in3rd and 4th $Q as you suggest. Hopefully, I can learn enough by then to get the fundies right as well as the charts. It is amazing to see how much of their budget revolves around crude cost. Thanks for all of your help; I'm glad I sent you the $SF index.
- debeers: SECTOR LEADERS- I agree with you. In that sprit, I think that a hard market favors stock pickers more than sector leaders. So, you can't just be in coal, for example, you have to be in the right coals and SMM is invaluable in saying "when." Over time ...
- debeers: THANKS TO ALL-ESPECIALLY CALLA AND LIZ- I reduced some positions and eliminated AApl at the open. You know how some folks cannot win with a particular sector? That's me with $JPM and PNC. PS. The ferts got a short term bear call from Soleil but they are maintaining their buy on $CF with a 149 target.I am going to relook at the rails next week and Bubba, the tuxedo cat,is still upset that I won't buy his favorite retail stock-Petsmart. Good weekend to all. We are getting severe @rain and a little hail in the $SF Bay Area.
- debeers: In the $SF bay area-Thrilled if they never built another house for a year or so as the housing values have plummeted. Huge foreclosure overhang and Wells is dribbling them in as is BAC.One can only guess as to WAMU's final toll. Dimon m on this but, when I refi'd--and brought taxes for 3 years, their only underwriting question was "How much do you want?"
- debeers: Obama administration has appealed the granting of 7 additional Gulf drilling permits according to the $SF Chronicle. I get that means Isenberg is the big winner for now! I agree w/ @Mrkkaz.
- samsonsab: Victoria's Secret-Ha! @Dan you may have an idea there-on a related note my husband likes to think that Victoria's 'secret' is really 'Victor's' expression of some unexplored 'issues' (by the way check out Aerie and soon you'll be writing them letters) however it turns out to be a rather boring history: It started as a small shop in $SF that was decorated like a Victorian brothel..hohum

- WhiteKnight: $SF - Out of a VS yesterday. Good volume. Extended on the weekly. Earnings on 02/10. Financial like @DAN was talking about. Thinking a good trade into earnings. Fundies look good according to IBD. Took a starter yesterday thinking caught it on the first day. Still new to technicals and VS's am I seeing this right? Then will add during phase 3 on the bounce?
- WhiteKnight: $SF - Out of a VS today. Good volume. Extended on the weekly. Earnings on 02/10. Financial like @DAN was talking about. Thinking a good trade into earnings. Still working on fundies so make sure you Do Diligence. Still new to technicals am I seeing this right? Looking at taking a starter on the first day. Would have gotten in earlier but had to sleep some time.
- ssteve: williemoe, thanks for info re: TC. Good idea, I will watch their webinars, and should really be able to figure the transition. I am not getting upgrades on $SF, which is not a good omen for SF. For example, it is not showing extended trading hours numbers on the charts, and they said, no not doing it yet (no idea when). I will be seriously looking at switching.
