- Forexpro: Re: $ZION Hi, Friends, Should have mentioned earlier that $JPM's lead bank analyst Steven Alexopolous gave a double upgrade to $ZION this morning ("underweight" to "overweight") on valuation. I've owned this from time to time, never successfully, but that isn't really the stock's fault. He also upgraded, again on price, $WAL and $CMA from "neutral" to "overweight". $ZION and $WAL are off to very good starts (up 4%2B percent), while $CMA is green, but unimpressively. Banks of course are a sizable brick in the current Wall of Worry, so any additional strength in the sector, especially for the regionals, could have ripple effects in the broader market. For me, $AMTD desktop software was a step down from ScotTrade. I am still not happy with $AMTD "Think-or-Swim" platform because I had something better. I kept going to the ETFdB.com holdings tab to view the specifics. So I wrote commandline(Perl because I was teaching myself Perl) program to accept an ETF name; download the ETF.db.com/etf/{ETF}/#holdings webpage then do a list of text edits to reduce to what I personally wanted to post. Also creates a spreadsheet for detailed analysis. Perl is good for text processing. What I do for fun.

- debeers: $CMA bought this/sold $CMI 1st thing. Keeping everything else. Added to $EL on the drop. This isn't a lipsticked pig as ULTA occasionally is. Added to $NKTR.Left $VLO/$SPLK/$MU/Left the $SIVB alone because these 2 banks will get the biggest kick from the Fed hikes in my opinion. Boeing is a no touch(and by that I mean I don't touch except to add if its punished by the weak hands.. By the way, Bank of America made a bad margin call (they shoulda listened to DAN about buying on margin LOL). Minor hit to such a big bank but that's why you buy banks in the first place because, even though they might unintentionally get into trouble, they are not supposed to go looking for it (see Wells)$BA- took about 30 seconds this am to refill the bar cart. otherwise left it alone.

- DAN: $KRE $KEY $CMA -- regional banks are working. They've been consolidating for a while, but they're starting the next leg higher. Combination of rising rates, reduced regulations, and the tax cut is really good for banks. And we're seeing more and more pundits talk about not underestimating the power of tax cuts. Easy Al Greenspan was chatting about it today. And in many cases, what is being said about a sector by so-called "authorities" is what's gonna drive the money. If the "experts" are saying that it's good to be in banks, then institutional money will start (and continue) flowing into banks. --Dan

Should we be selling into the strength or buying breakouts? $CMA has moved above consolidation and is clearly above the trade box, while $KRE and $KEY are still in the “box”. Please clarify. Txs in advance for your comments.
- DAN: $CMA $KRE $RF $KEY -- The regional banks are all looking good. I wouldn't say that any of them are "trades." But for the less active trader, I think any of these work for financial exposure.

The average daily volume is 1,531, 343. My contention is that only the poorly informed or new traders are adding to or buying new positions now under the mistaken view that because they are now in the stock that they have made the money that those who entered at the correct time have made.. Experienced traders and the institutions will swoop in on the drop and you'll see about 9-12 million shares trade on THAT day.

I'm long $BAC and $KRE...if you would like to Spec I would go with a ETF like $XLF $KRE or $KBE. You could also go with a 3x's ETF like $FAS and it's HOD RHRN @ $40.82. LOL
- issues: Comparing banks these are up the most: $KEY $RF $CFG $CMA $BAC on my watch list. We own $MS & now (as of a minute ago BAC) I look for an increase in quarterly eps. All of these are up 40% or more since the election. What goes up may soon come down? Who knows. Next week Jumpin Janet does her thing... maybe that's the catalyst?

- Lou: Done for the week - busy day - rolled short $UA puts; opened synthetic long with short puts/long calls in $LVS; taking in stock - per plan - from short $CHRW $FB and $MGM puts. All except $FB are quite profitable and $FB is slightly under water but I want to own it. Expired short puts in $CNX $MGM $CMA $ETP $FLR $ETE. All in all, a decent expiry and am happy with the week/month. Enjoy the weekend all. Corrected - $CNX short puts should expire.

- DAN: @Lou $CMA Yeah, I like it. But it needs to stay close to current highs. I like the potential for a move higher...but it's in consolidation now. Generally speaking, I'm not a fan of financials right now. Rates are too low, and the FOMC is a bit unpredictable. But as banks go, I think CMA is fine. Hope that helps.
