I would be interested in knowing how the limitation on business deductions ( the first 2 percent of your $AGI is not deductible) can be avoided merely by your tax status as a trader.

- rrussellpc: Don't start making estimated tax payments. Once you start, if you ever stop, the $IRS will be sending you correspondence and will be breathing down your back. Instead increase your withholding on your W-2 salary to cover the capital gains. I am a practicing $CPA and that is the advice I give my clients. That is what I do for my taxes also. The general rule is if your $AGI is less than $150K in the prior year you must pay in the lessor of 100% of your prior year tax or 90% of your current year tax. If your $AGI for the prior year was greater then $150K then the minimum withholding is the lessor of 110% of your prior year tax or 90% of the current year tax. There are special rules for farmers and fishermen. I hope that helps. Richard
- mepcc1: Taxes - As far as I know, if you are not declaring "Trader" status on your taxes, all of the publications/subscriptions/classes are deductible subject to exceeding 2.5% or $AGI only.
- hjssmm: Thanks LaurieAnn, both strategies can work... would need to calculate no. of #options to properly hedge the position. I am also thinking of biting the bullet and just selling partial positions each month as well and not worry about the tax consequences. Fortunately I have some carry forward tax credits from another business that shelters around 30% of any $AGI I will have in the next several years. Would actually rather use some of the sales proceeds to take some new positions that I am learning about on SMM. Cheers!
