Packaging Corporation of America (PKG) reported 1st Quarter March 2018 earnings of $1.55 per share on revenue of $1.7 billion. The consensus earnings estimate was $1.53 per share on revenue of $1.6 billion. Revenue grew 10.0% on a year-over-year basis. The company said it expects second quarter earnings of approximately $1.96 per share. The current consensus earnings estimate is $1.89 per share for the quarter ending June 30, 2018. Packaging Corp of America is a producer of container board and corrugated products in the United States. The Company also produces multi-color boxes and displays, as well as meat boxes and wax-coated boxes for the agricultural industry.

I have no positions in any: $BPOP and $AFL have appeared a few times. $DATA I avoid. I just doing this to keep my skills on edge. When doing this during the week, it's second nature to me.
... - issues: Dan mentioned his long term account held $PRXL and he said it was OK to buy here. So guess what? We bought it this morning. Also taking a shot at $BITA (probably too early) with tight stop $81. An old fav' that got away from us was $PKG, bought it back PP. We just couldn't wait for $CAR to bounce off 50dma, so we bought it. Today is Christmas. Also on Dan's mention we bought $WSM. Lastly we stopped out of $CTRP too soon, (it's at the 50dma) so we used the 1% rule and bought it back. I guess we're really GETTING OUR MONEY's WORTH from SMM!!! aka Santa Market Mentor.
- issues: $PKG We like this. It looks like it's putting in a bottom. We sold a PP at this price, now it's baaaccckkk. I would like to buy it back but I'm hesitating because this is Awful August (Aug/Sept not great for stocks.) Competition is $KS but we like $PKG better based on fundies. Could this $PKG be the H & S of a cripple, bent over and in a wheel chair? It's hard to get a h& s out of this.

- issues: @AndyK $PKG Beat earnings estimates by 5.5% ($!.10 to $1.16) but we don't see the POP we had hoped for. We still have our 1/4 position but IBD shows it's accumulation of E (lowest) so it's not being bought by institutions. What we like is the eps estimates going forward qt/qt 1.10 to 1.16 1.26 etc. Since they are increasing we will continue holding long term. The Street rates it a "Buy" Market Edge rates it L-2 (L-0 is highest). The PE is 13.8 Zacks rates it a 4 (5 is lowest). So we continue to hold our measly few shares. How about you?
- AndyK: @issues $PKG I am wary based on the way it has sold off from the initial high this morning. I still like the stock long term for the fundamentals, but have placed a stop on a large portion of my position just below 65, which has been support and was the low over the last several months.

- AndyK: @issues Don't really have advice on $PKG but I am holding as well. Personally I'm planning to wait for earnings.
- AndyK: @issues The only other thing I would say is that $PKG is at 200DMA support, which it has not touched in quite some time. I don't see a reason to sell unless it breaks support convincingly, as otherwise it would be a great entry. However, if we do get a break I will probably exit the position entirely.
- issues: @AndyK $PKG Andy there's this article on IBD today re: $PKG Packaging Corp. Of America's EPS Growth Seen Slowing $PKG earnings and revenue growth, lifted by a large acquisition last October, is expected to slow in the second quarter. Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters estimate Q2 earnings will rise 56% to $1.11 per share, while revenue is anticipated to jump 82% to $1.46 billion compared with Q2 2013. Results are set to come out Monday. The expected Q2 growth would be a deceleration from Q1 earnings and revenue growth rates of 69% and 90%, respectively. PCA's Q2 results could provide clues to those from competitor KapStone (NYSE:$KS), which also makes kraft paper bags for agricultural, baking, cement and chemical products. The IBD 50 company is scheduled to report quarterly earnings July 30. Earnings for $KS are expected to jump 150% to 60 cents a share. Revenue is seen rising 76% to $574 million.
- issues: @AndyK $PKG Thanks Andy. I sold 3/4 of the position since we had a profit. As Dan says, "we can always buy it back." But unfortunately it probably will zoom up since we sold 3/4 of our position. On the last earnings report price dropped from $69 to $65 even though they beat by 9%.
- issues: @AndyK $PKG The chart doesn't look as good as $KS but the fundies are better with $PKG. What they say about "guidance" probably will determine it's valuation (duh!) The volume is increasingly red, to the down side. I could easily see it drop to $62 where it was in Feb. What size position do you have?

I've seen this happen where the market expects a drop but the announcement is position and it really zooms up. I think there is a better than 60 40 chance that this will happen since the price is down so much now.

Probably best to wait until the dust clears on this treacherous mkt.$MNST This trade is kind of over, sorry(with so many sports and extreme energy drinks coming to market) but if can you get it around 57 it may work as we near the summer to maybe 68ish. PEP might take a run at it? $CERN at 49 should work itself higher. Earnings -4/24 PM But I'm looking at these at this time at ONLY these very bottom support prices for a 3-9 month's hold if the market resumes an uptrend: $CNQ at 39, $VLO at 50, $HAR at 100, $ALK at 87, $SAVE at 53, $GTAT at 16, $SUNE at 16, $TMO at 115, $MPAA at 24, $HEES at 35, $PKG at 63, $URI at 85, $BITA at 31, $CUR at 3.50, $TSLA at 185 and $FB if it gets beaten down to 51-52. - 54GMC100: $PKG -- up about 8% on earning news. Look at the chart for this thing, been a great add every time it touches down near the 50dma. Today it has broken out way over the 2nd B-band.

- greberalan: $PKG @SMM $PKG PackagingCorp of America is up about 2.6% today (bounced off 50DMA.) I don't know why this bounce on a down mkt day? It does not report earnings until 2/11. I don't see any news today on $PKG to justify this bounce. Anyone know of news on PKG? I have been long PKG.
- bglee: $PKG -- @greberalan, I don't see any news or analyst upgrade. Looks to me like it's a chart event. The stock has been performing great. As the market fell, holders took profits just case it's the big one. Yesterday, it bounced off the 50-day $MA, making an open green candle, which is like the dinner bell for the bulls. So today, the bulls rush back in. $PKG reports earnings after the close on 2/11, so plenty of time for an earnings run. And considering how overwhelmed $UPS was during the holidays, I think people are expecting lots of packaging to have been sold.
- bglee: $PKG -- @greberalan, @bybyjanice, I change my mind, the IP news is a better catalyst for the bounce. I think the fact that $PKG popped above yesterday's high within the first 15 minutes of trading added fuel to the move up.
