I'm also on earning runs...but I took profits on $VLO today and I'm only swinging 15% of my position in $PTEN, into earnings in the morning.

Already news stories of private planes packed with $PTEN, Ammonia Nitrate, or whatever their weapon of choice, being considered for use as bombs. I'm looking for a drift, if not a drop, to the lower range of the trading box in whatever stock you choose. I have to think that the algos are more pre-disposed to selling than to buying. At least until September 12th and hopefully, an uneventful anniversary. I could be wrong but the Mentor wants me to have an opinion. This posting is my therapy. Cheaper than a shrink.

The first seven (and 8 if you include EOG) are related to the $N Dakota thing. I went thru $ALL the EIGHT and found the ONLY one which strikes my fancy is $EOG but the ... - richard9f: $PTEN Contract oil/gas driller popped out of a tight volatility and tagged 21, the top of the channel for the uptrend from June. A close above 21 might be the buy point with a stop around 20.45.
- richard9f: $OIH @Medlar, Nat gass still getting whacked from the inventory builds, and the futures dropped below $4. $ECA is the outlier at the moment. From the fallout of the offshore problem, I'm watching the land based contract driller, such as $HP, $UNT and PTEN. I think they may have been pulled down with the entire drilling sector. $HP didn't report a very good $Q yesterday, but did have a positive outlook on US land drilling and held the $41 level. $PTEN reported a good $Q and is trying to breakout above $15.85. $UNT reports on Tuesday and is holding the 47 level.

- Dan: Hey Team. Hope you're all hanging in there. Two sectors that are moving constructively today are Gold (inflation worries) and Oil & Gas Drillers ($100 oil). Most mining stocks are higher, and I'll be watching to see how they close. As for the drillers, check out these tickers: $HP, GW, $UNT, PDE, $NBR, $WLL, $PTEN, $RIG, $ESV, $PGH (check out the yield), $PKD, $WTI, ME, and BZP. All are in pretty bullish patterns (though of different varieties). Also, $PBR is an obvious candidate (it has been in the news lately b/c of Heebner/#CNBC interview last week). I'll be looking at these companies for inclusion on the Focus Stock List. Some are also pretty good #squeeze candidates. I'd welcome any discussion on this industry. If you've got an opinion, please express it and we'll start working on 2008.

I have been reviewing items in the 2 above categories and came up with a list of attractive or potentially attractive items, based on their PE, chart, and potential: $LUFK, $ESV, $UNT, $GLF, $RDC, $NBR, $HERO, BJS, $WTI, $PTEN, $BAS, $TTI, BRNC, $RES, OMNI. Some of these are land drillers -- many of the latter are natural gas drillers. What with T.Boon Pickens talking about natural gas AND the fact that gas is profitable down to $5, I would have no hesitation in buying land drillers. For those looking at Canadian oil trusts but put off by the possible Alberta legislation, $PDS which pays 7.4% and is a drilling trust might be an interesting play. I don't think the Alberta legislation includes drillers, just producers. /* @Phil */
